Try using garlic in the horse in questions feed, it is a great all round supplement, and helps keep flies and colds away! ;) My yard used to have a garlic mill and we put a few turns in each horses feed.

There are tons of things you can use, I heard once about spraying diluted lemon, and garlic on! (I'm not certain about the lemon, but meh test it first ;))

EDIT: Look on the internet, and summer issues of mags!

I use savlon, vinegar, water, tea-tree oil (few drops) citronella (few drops), all mixed up in a houseplant spray. Use about the same amounts of savlon and vinegar, an equal amount of water and just the drops. Lasts for ages, all the ingredients are in the supermarket (well the bigger ones sell the essential oils) and works really well.

We have two ponies with Sweet Itch and use Boots Extra Strength Tropical Insect Repellent (50% DEET) with Avon Skin- So-Soft bath oil!! It's greasy so it stays on for ages. Mix the two together and spray sparingly - gives a great show-shine too!!

We have a wide range depending on wht horse has reactions to what etc.

1. (For very sensitive skin) A spray bottled filled with water add 3-10 drops of tea tree oil (depending on size of bottle) Can also use tiger balm (random thing lol)

2. (For not quite as sensitive skin) Water with tea tre oil (or tiger balm) and vinegar/lemon juice (or both)

3. (For average skin) Water, tea tree oil, tiger balm (if you have it) vinegar lemon juice garlic powder and olbas oil.

I use the third one on Scooby, it really works and appears to be sweatproof (dont know why) slightly waterproof, however looses effectiveness after a major bath or something.
