i was just wondering what your veiws and opinions are on NAF devils relief.
i have bought some for my 16year old as he is a bit hobbely on his back legs and has stiff joints, and sometimes slips or falls over when i ride him:o
do you think that devils relief will help him at all?
also i was thinking of putting him on somesort of verteran mix (not a realy expensive one though) could anyone recomend a good one?
thanks

well i've got sandy who's 27 and quite a stiff old chap on it, it definately helps him, he's less stiff and more comfortable
but i've been told on NR by people who's opinions i respect, that it acts like a pain killer, it treats the pain but doesn't help to cure or make things any better
also there are some worries that it irritates the stomach over time and causes quite a bit of damage.
because sandy is so old, i don't mind risking this for his comfort now.
if he was younger i'd be trying to find other ways to help him, and would try a joint supplement like cortaflex which is supposed to prevent/repair wear and tear damage, or cider vinegar or do some digging and find out other ways to treat it.
hope this helps.
if you have already bought it, give it a try. if it helps at least you know it will help him
eta the active ingredient in devils relief is devils claw, a herbal remedy

If it is possible, can you get natural/pure devils claw? Its organic, so alot better for him.
But saying that..........natural is good to a certain extent....:)

devils claw is a herb which has anti inflamatory propertys and can be used to ease inflammation, artritic conditions etc it can be used as a herbal alternative to bute. It is an antiinflammatory which will take down swelling and ease pain. i would recommend also using something like MSM (orchard equestrian do a good one) as this will help the joints. Other products I would recommend would be cider vinegar, honey & cod liver oil, garlic, meadowsweet, clivers, buckwheat.
The best prioduct I have ever used is proflammaid by highform it is excellent

I use Devils Claw liquid on my horse recommended by my vet really to help with any pain he is 17 and just coming back from a ligament injury.
I had read and heard people say about long term use can cause liver damage. I asked my vet the other day about his thoughts on this.
As he said it is a theory that this can happen, he feels that if your horse lives to about 30 but if he is in pain and has no working live what is the point and fun for the horse. It is better your horse could live to say 25 years but is pain free and has a good working life. He feels the pros outweigh the cons. After listening to him I have decided to go on with Devils Claw.

I have used it with good effect, it is an anti-inflamitory so reduces pain by reducing inflamation so should also help prevent further damage to some extent...hopefully.
Given the concerns re constant use causing long term problems, my approach was to use it when most needed, when its cold and damp but try and give breaks in warm weather (when joints are more supple) or during periods when he's not working, and also giving the odd de-tox, perhaps a herbal tea??

cobsrgood, Sandy has been on naf devils relief every single day for about 4 years, he ain't got any signs of liver damage or stomach irratation
in fact he's a big fat healthy lard arse :D
it's just that i thought i should mention it
one bottle certainly won't harm Skittles, i'm sure.
i wished i hadn't mentioned side effects now :o :o

Becca,
You should try Equine Answers PremierFlex - it's cheaper than cortaflex. Or as Mr Skittles is not a spring chicken anymore you could think about trying PremierFlex Plus.
PM me if you want anymore details

Teabiscuit, don't feel bad about mentioning the <whispers quietly> liver damage:) Becca is wel known for going over the top about these things:rolleyes: I have told her that, as Skittles is really only used for hacking, I am not prepared to fork out £60 for cortaflex and that devils relief would be a suitable alternative for him. Please don't feel bad, imho its good to be armed with all the facts;)

i have used the pure devils claw granules for a few years now, prefer that as the other stuff has additives in it.....

thanks scoobiedoo :)
Sandy doesn't get a veteren mix because he's such a good doer, he just gets a normal course mix and some chaff
1. to put his devils relief in
2. because the old guy loves his grub and i want to spoil him a bit :o
jessey would be able to recommend a good one, she's a bit of a whizz at feedstuff :)

I've had Harry on the granules since he his back became really sore from his saddle, prefer the granules, as someone told me the liquid can have alcohol in it

I would be interested to hear how the NAF devils relief compares to Global Herbs Bute X. Do they both do the same thing? I use Bute X on my horse to help with his stiffness and was wondering if there are any other supplements that do a similar job?
