The question is in the title ....

If you're barefoot do you use KC, Pete Ramey, Jaime Jackson etc and if your horse is shod do use use 'bog standard' farrier, cytek, plastic etc?

Just being nosey :)

Saff is KC La Pierre barefoot trimmed.

star is shod by the college apprentice farriers, and its FREE!!! they're really good because they spend ages working on the horses and are under constant supervision by the lecturers and always do a super duper job!

We started out barefoot with an SHP (Strasser Hoofcare Professional). LOL I can hear people gasp now.
Our SHP was awesome. We have a wonderful Barefoot Community here in Texas though. Right from the start there was more of a knowledge sharing and desire to learn from the different teachers than the 'this way is teh right way' type of thinking.
OH and I have attended several hoofcare get-togethers and cadaver trim days sponsored by the Texas Natural Hoofcare group and it was attended by SHPs, Olivio students and others. Our SHP has always been open to share her knowledge as well as accept ideas from other 'hoof care gurus' to benefit the horse the most rather than stay rigid within certain parameters.

Texas is a big place though and it's tough to get people to come out to where we live so in the end it was most feasible to go to seminars and hire the SHP for coaching than to plan on having a trimmer come out to see us regularly.
Until I was 5 months pregnant OH and I were trimming together. Then he took over and at this point he is the only one trimming our horses. They are doing great. OH has really become obsessed with hooves. I think his dream would be to apprentice under Ramey but when we checked into it he was booked out far, far ahead. Plus OH of course needs to keep his 'regular' job to support our horse habit.

I use a wonderful 'bog standard' farrier who has been in the business for years, isn't in it for the money, and is always great for advice.

Plus he's pretty easy on the eye, too. :D:D

Red's farrier is the sweetest farrier i've met! He's not in it for the money and has the patience of a (something with good patience!).

He shoes 6 horses at a time including Red, and when Disney and Red both came down with Navicular, he had trouble keeping shoes on Disney but always made the trip to come down the next day to put it back on for her. And Red had remedial shoeing for just under two years, and he still willingly shoes our horses for us :)

ETA: He also has introduced shoeing to a very green TB who wouldn't even walk up to his van :o

My lot are done by a good farrier although I roll edges as and when needed between shoeings.

Which reminds me - must go phone farrier..................

Peter Ramey type with his own "twist" I do them myself and he comes out every 3-5 months to check and be sure everyone is on track.. or if I have any concerns - or a new horse starting to develop a strategy. We email back and forth photos/assesments etc. very cool to be able to do that!

Muggins here shoes the ones who need it and trims the ones who don't.

Never used a fancy trim in my life, an ordinary grass trim got me around many an endurance ride, so that's how we still go on. With those with good feet it works for them.

For those who need shoes they get what they need. As light a shoe as possible, feathered edges for piggy as he's good at treading on himself.

Cytek is not for us.

I use a regular farrier, but he is often attending various barefoot seminars and ones about different shoeing techniqes, he also does alot of remedial work. He recomended me to go barefoot.

He's a very nice chap and always willing to help you out and the most amazing part of all, he has a secreatary back in the office so you can ALWAYS get hold of her and she picks on him until he calls you back, or will just make your appointments etc or she will call you if he is running late/not going to make it - very rare, he is normally early

Jessey, we were talking about farriers here, this is not normal behaviour for a farrier, are you sure it's a farrier you are speaking of, ????

I'm off for a lie down in a dark room. :D :D :D

Flora is barefoot after being turned away for 7 months lame with a nasty sidebone. My Vet and my farrier liased over what she needed and my farrier trims her. No problems (furiously touches wood) ;)

Mine are barefoot, trimmed by my farrier who is very 'into' barefoot, has studied Pete Ramey, KC, JJ etc and picks what he thinks is best.

I think that's exactly the point though. A horse with good feet will do okay in a pasture trim or shoes or whatever. But a horse that is thought to 'need' shoes might just not do well in a regular pasture trim. Our three are all very different. A QH with 'good' feet, a draft cross with 'great' feet and a TB with 'bad' feet. I used to be the kind of owner that was convinced the TB needed special shoes because his feet were so bad and he went lame everytime he lost a shoe. Then by the time the farrier came, too much hoof had crumbled away to attach another shoe without adding acrylic to make a new hoof for the nails to go into, etc.
After 2 years of barefoot trims all 3 are doing wonderful. Barefoot trims aren't meant to be fancy. They just more accurately try to emulate the shape of a natural hoof to allow for proper function.
