They look like the Western equivalent of Icelandic-topped stirrup irons/Heather Moffett stirrup irons.

Just twist your stirrups (round the way it needs to go for your foot) and stick a broom pole through them while not using, very soon the fender will twist enough to make your stirrup face the right way when mounted :D

i think its just the metal bit that turns the stirrup around. i have my hm stirrups that i love, aswell as a few pairs of icelandic topped stirrups and now find my ankles hurt when riding in my fenders.

my hubby, not knowing much about horses and such, had been paying attention to me when i mentioned that my knees hurt while riding, so he bought me a pair of those. as i said, he doesn't know much, and subsequently, bought the wrong size (3 instead of 2½). they did, however, fit my friends' stirrups, so we put them on one day before a road ride. after about 20 minutes or so, she said these things are the greatest, my knees do not hurt. she now uses them all the time and her knees still do not hurt. we are now in the process of finding some for me (2½ are difficult to find around here), and will probably just order them.
i have heard about using broomsticks, but haven't tried it yet.
