hi all, I would like to know if you could tell me what is your daily routine for looking after your DIY horsey. ie, what time do you have to get up to see to the horses first feed? how many times do you go to the yard to look after your horse. Do you stable them over night and then let them out after grooming etc for the rest of the day? Does the routine change come winter/spring/summer ? ani info would be great!

My lower back is a bit stiff, but then i was hanging off the edge of the bed when i woke up with Amys leg across me....I'm still up in the clouds at the moment and I dont have enough people to talk about it to.
Amy is riding this morning though so I get to go to the stables again.:D

In winter, Pride is in at night and out during the day.

I get up at 6.30 and leave the house at 7.30am dragging my mum with me :p
I turn out Pride and 1 other (three days a week, my friend does the others)
I go to school and get the bus back to the stables and get there between 3 and 3.30pm. I normally do my jobs (muck out, haynets, feeds) and bring in when all the other owners get there at about 4.30pm then groom and ride.

Summer Pride is out 24/7 and i only go up once a day unless he has to be in during the day for some reason.

Hi

Kia is only fed in the morning when kept in and our routine goes like this.

5/8.30 am depending on work shift
Rugs changed and out or rugs off and fed if in. Mucked out and haynet in regardless. Make up night feed and bag of strw for bedding down at night.

6/7pm
Kia in feet, feet washed, if out, rugs changed/ back on, feed in and night night.

That's daily for us and works well!!

Well....in Summer:

Red and his 5 other fieldmates are out 24/7 I go down after school to check them all, adjust fly rugs etc and normally ride.

In winter, they are out during the day (from about 9-5) and then in at night. Either Julie, Natz, Me or David turns them out in the morning during the week, and then I go down after school every night to muck out, feed, water, haynets etc and get them in along with normally one of the other people. At the weekend, I turn out in the morning and then bring in at night. They go out abit later at the weekends but come in at the same time.

Anything else? Just ask! x

In winter and summer Honey is out 24/7

I usually get up about 6 - half past before school
I sort out Honeys feed for the day and night feed, also all the water and haynets for her and my mums mare. Once ive done that i turnout mums mare in the field opposite Honey's.

When i get back from school -3pm- I get Honey in and give her a groom - possibly ride her if its not too dark, rug her up, turn her out for the night and give her, her night feed, then give her a pile of hay :)
Then i muck out mums mares stable - bring her in, feed her, give her, her hay. i have finished for the day :)

I finally get inside about half 7 - 8pm, knackered;)

star is only on DIY at college, through winter we dont have any turnout as the fields are awful so at the moment i get up at 6:30 get down to the yard about 7:20 put star on the horse walker, muck out do haynets etc, bring star back from the walker and give him his breakfast, if i dont have an early lecture i will give him a good groom.

i go back down about 1pm depending on lectures and just give him a quick once over and check he has enough hay.

3:30 ish i go back down skip out give hay and his tea

7pm i got down again to ride as its usually nice and quiet, then give him a good groom if i didnt have time in the morning rug up and put to bed with a mountain of hay and his late night feed

When i was working full time on my gap yard my boy was on DIY livery, I was really lucky as my best friend also kept her horse at the yard.

He would get fed by YO around 6ish, friend would come up about 8.30 put him in the school, skip out for me, put hay down check water etc bring him out of school. I would come up about back of 5/6ish, throw him back out in school, make his dinner up, muck out, bed down, hay etc. Then ride!

In summer he was out 24/7 so he would get checked on at around 6am by YO and later on by friend. Then i would come up after work bring him in for a play :D

Winter :- I go up in the morning. 4 days a week at 9am and do all the mucking out new haynets, fresh water. Then I will ride him. He usually gets turned out about 1pm by the time I have finished hugging and pampering him. 3 days a week I go up at 7am and turn him straight out. Muck out, change haynet and water etc. Rug on.

Evening:- Get up before dark so usually 4pm. Bring in. 3 evenings a week I do groundwork training for 20 mins. Groom, rug off and hug him for ages. Im usually finshed for 5.30 pm by which time the YO and other liveries are walking about with their horses. This keeps Captain entertained for a while longer. :)

I tend also to pick up his field poo everyday. I keep a tub of water by his field bucket so it is there to hand when he hasnt much left. PS this is daily fresh water before you all think I leave him with mucky water. :p

Winter:
Morning
Leave home at 7am cycle to the farm.
Pick out feet and groom.
Ride anything from 30 mins to 2 hours. She gets 1/2 days off a week.
Muck out sort out everything for the evening. Hay nets, feed, bed, water etc
cycle home

evening
leave home 3.30pm
cycle to the farm
Bring in from field, take worst of mud off if dry, pick out feet and stable
Everything is done in the morning so cycle home again.

Summer:

cycle to the farm lunchtime.
Bring in from field, groom, pick out feet and tack up.
Ride.
Pick out feet and turn out.

We do a quick visual check of all the horses at the farm. Nothing major just a head count and make sure none have any legs missing, rugs done up etc lol. Which means that my horse gets checked over around 10 times a day in summer and 20ish times a day in winter!! I also know if I am late for whatever reason she will either be turned out or brought in for me.

first feed: 7-8am.
visits are about twice, for an hour or two AM and PM.
live out 24/7 all year, clipless and rugless or with a bib/low trace and rugged
in summer less forage and hard feed is ed, but other than that maybe restricted grazing if he gets a bit podgy (a weightape is used)
more forage/hard feed in the winter

winter:
AM - (an hour later at weekends approx) 6.30 bring in, checkover and groom with hay and water.
7.00 do some groundwork or ride out for 30 mins - a couple of hours at weekends.
checkover/brushover, rug if necessary and chuck out hay, give loads of kisses and drag myself away
PM - any time after school/work, bring in and excersise, brush, etc.
then feed at about 5-5.30pm.

summer:
AM - same routine more or less!

sometimes excerissed AM + PM or AM/PM

In at night winter:
alarm goes off 5:10 am. Eventually crawl out of bed and arrive at yard 5:30. Feed all on yard, groom/rug/turn out mine and a friends mare. prepare evening feed/hay etc, go home to do same with children/dogs/husband.
pick up kids around 4:30 pm, straight to yard, friend may have brought her in if weather bad, otherwise bring in, clean/groom/ rug/ hay. takes about 45 mins, then home, feed kids/dogs/hamsters etc, back to yard around 7ish, school or feed and settle for night. Thats midweek, weekends get more of a chance to hack/school etc.

summer is sooo much easier:
alarm goes of at 5:30 (I get a lie in haha), bring her in from the paddock, check over, groom, flyspray and mask, feed, turn back out and poo-pick. Evenings go back again to check/groom/play with/ride etc etc.

I live by the clock and have my 'routine' down to minute timing; it's a slog in winter, no two ways about it. MUCH easier if you have the option for 24/7 turnout, but here in the southeast thats becoming somewhat rare.

The absolute worst thing for me is that even on those very few days I get the opportunity for a lie-in (like to 7am ...), I still wake up at 5:30!!

i work 3 different shifts, so when i start at 8am i get down the yard at 6.30,
(the first person down feeds) so feed in if needed, rug up and put my 2 out, then put both my beds up, then go straight to work, lay beds, hay water feeds and ride in evenings
if i start at 9.30 im down the yard for about 7, rug up turn out, put beds up, and do hay and feeds then lay beds, water etc so all i have to do in evening is ride,
if i start at 10.30 i get down at 7, generally ride for half an hour, then turn out, muck out, and do all my jobs, so just have to get in in evenings and pit to bed,
im lucky as have a lady that helps with my pony, she rides her out during the day, and pampers her lots, we do share her stable duties, i will muck out and she will finish off etc,
in the summer if weather is ok they stay out of a night, so no mucking out,
they just come in for a few hours to get out the sun, and have a break from the grass etc,
diy is hard work, but im really fussy, and dont like the idea of other people doing my horses, when they dont have any relashionship with them,
