Hi
Has anyone had their horse on danilon over a long period of time.
I have put Kelly on Danilon, as I thought it would be less harmfull to the liver.
She has bad arthritis, and osteo arthritis of the cofin bone. She is 27 and retired. Since I pput her on Danilon ( one sachet everyother day). she has seemed a little more grumpy.
Do you know of any alternative to Danilon or Bute.
She currently has Two scoops of Safe and Sound
One scoop of 16 plus
Corteflex
Garlic, Cider Vinegar and Sunflower oil.
Top score haylite
Any suggestions. She is not ridden, but I do try to lead her in hand
twice a week, to save her from boredom.
Thanks Ann

I have had my mare on Danilon since June. She has stiffness in her hind legs, the most likely cause being arthritis. I started her on cortaflex on the vet's advice and also on a sachet of danilon per day. I have since cut it down to half a sachet. My vet said that both together is better than one or the other. Though I am tempted to see how she would do without the danilon over the winter as the ground has now softened. Danilon is supposed to better than bute for long-term use. I too would be interested to hear if anyone has suggestions for alternatives though :)

Not long term but Bo was on danilon 2 sachets a day for about 2 months then reduced it over the next month. I was given it as it is meant to reduce the affects on the liver.
You could try Devils Claw root, you can buy it from Dodsen and Horrell and others and add it to feed daily. It is meant to reduce swelling and help reduce pain. I have had success with it (there is a thread on here somewhere about it, try a search).
There are also various homeopathic remedies readily available which help with arthritis, I had a pamphlet once which you could go through answering questions to see which remedies would be best depending on your horses symptoms (I'll have a look at home later) but it would be worth googling or maybe even contacting a homoepathic vet for advise.
Stick with the cortaflex and Cider Vinegar as they will both help.
The best thing about the homeopathic treatment is it can be used alongside conventional treatment and they won't effect each other but both will help.
When my Boy was on Danilon I was advised to give 1/2 sachets every day or even 1/4 sachets twice daily rather than 1 every other day as it helps to maintain a constant level of painkiller/anti-inflamitory in the system which is better than it yo-yoing and helps keep them more comfortable :D

My old boy was on a sachet of Bute per day from aged 24yrs until he was put down aged 29. Suffered absolutely no ill effects whatsoever & made his life very comfortable. He was still ridden until he was 27 then walked out in hand on a regular basis thereafter.
Hope this helps.

They also take blood tests regularly if they are on it long term to test for liver function. If it was my horse, I wouldn't worry. I tend to think that even if, in the worst case scenario, it shortened her life by a few months or so, the quality of her life whilst she is here is the most important thing.
