mecate reins

im wanting to get a bosal and wondering about reins, do i need mecate reins (expensive:eek: ) or can i use these sort of reins http://www.ekmpowershop.co.uk/ekmps/shops/scotknots/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=24

i have some rope reins by the same company that i use already on his sidepull, had some extra long ones made for maddie about 4 metres long, that maddie broke the clip off, could i use them?

those will be JUST fine my every day ones are nylon my show ones.. well they were a lot of money ;)

Weight is important - and that looks to be about right with the one you are looking at.

With a bosal (sorry if I am teling you what you already know) but the reins are tied (in a special way) on to the bosal, not clipped or attached like normal reins.
Mecate's are normally about 22 feet long, to allow for the reins, the knot and the lead :D

I just have sailing/poly rope from B&Q on my bosal, its a bit light as I could only get the really thin stuff, but I have never had a problem with it but I will eventually get round to replacing it :D

theres a nylon mecate with horse hair on arizonas for 27.50, or poly mecate with horse hair tassels on western scene for £21.75.

I love thick rope reins, i have rope reins from scot knots which i love, and i rode with a mecate when i had a western lesson and i liked that aswell. At least if i get a proper mecate i know its long enough, and can be used on maddie as she needs extra long reins and broke her new ones.

so whats the difference between poly mecate and nylon mecate then?

Feel more so. I like Nylon better for feel I find Poly TENDS to feel more plasticy. i also find Poly more likely to rope burn me - or "melt" if tied to something and pulled tight.

You can just tie off without all the crazy Bosal knots. I cheat it all the time - only my show set is tied correctly. My others are half assed without the lead rope so that I don't have to have so many ropes about.
