I didn't quite understand the article. If neighbors are worried then surely they are worried about a development in that area period, not because it's an equestrian community.
I live in an equestrian community and don't think it places any more strain on the environment than a regular subdivision would...

if not less.. as more land is given to the animals then to people.
It's a VERY pricey area already and I think it's basicly "not in my back yard" Ism at it's finest.
Spring Bank and Chestermere do it quite nicely

Honestly, I do think people may be objecting mainly to the sort of "subdivision style" nature of the development (albeit subdivisions with large land area). If I am not mistaken Millarville is a very rural, quiet place. As I said it is rural, but as far as I know it is more traditional. The new development would be full of upper-end modern homes etc. fairly closely packed in. There is some beautiful land out that way, but having these kinds of developments can leave quite an eye-sore on the landscape, and bodes sadly for the future of such a nice part of this region. If I know Calgary's developments, it may not be particularly tasteful but full of modern giant homes quite out of place often.
I doubt people are particularly worried about the horses, I suspect it is the development of that area in general. Calgary is exploding and we are losing some of our nicest country areas to development - just the way of a big growing city and no easy answers. The City of Calgary just approved a packed-in basic subdivision right beside Spruce Meadows (not acreages, but small lots) - I mean literally across the road - Spruce Meadows used to be in the country but now it is going to be in the middle of the city. I think people are worried about the expansion in that part of Calgary. And of course wetlands, forest, farmland etc. are inevitably lost along the way. :( Not sure what the answer is.

My Bro. lives out there, moved out about 12 years ago, might be more. He is now a Canadian citizen as is his wife and kids.
Went to visit a few years back, was tempted by an abatoire for sale just on the Quebec border. Decided it was too hot in summer! I'd have to spend the summer up in the far, far north.

I am just outside of Toronto....we have not seen any serious snow yet and the temperature has been above freezing almost every day so far this winter. Unfortunately it has rained almost every day for what seems like six months and everybody has muddy paddocks.
I think you would have to go pretty far north to get that -40. It's probably thanks to global warming.
