I suppose it had to happen sometime but nothing could of prepared me for coming off today.
I was exercising Mikey this morn and to be honest struggling a bit he is very enthusiastic and I struggling to get him to walk and trot he just wanted to canter my control was terrible..anyway had just lengthened the stirrups for the 3rd time in one session as I couldn't get them right. I had finally got into a comfy walk round the menage and was just asking for the trot when something spooked him and he spun..off I flew...damn but it was a long way down.
RI came and helped me up I was very stiff made me stretch etc move around and then get back on..where i did a little walk and then an even shorter trot..as that really hurt...decided that was enough and decided to go home and have a bath.
By the time I had got into the car and driven down the really potholey road I was in agony and decided to drive down the road to the A&E was in a real state by the time I got there. Long story short..I have a fractured spine no riding for at least 4-6weeks..I'll know more tomorrow after I have been to the Fracture Clinic...it's only a small fracture but still it has shaken me so much...not sure how I feel about riding at the moment but I am not going to make any decisions until I am over the shock.
Right am off to a drug induced sleep now and a hot water bottle.
a very sore

What a terrible shock for you and a painful one too.
I think you are right in not making any decisions until you are over the shock, but for now concentrate on getting well. Let s know what fracture clinic says.
You take care. Speak soon. xx

Oh you poor thing  That's not how first falls are supposed to be :( You're supposed to gently tumble into a nice soft springy menage and not do any damage! The shock of a first fall is bad enough, never mind having fractured your spine
Look after yourself, take it easy and try not to worry about how you feel about getting back on. There's plenty time for that once you are physically better.... :)

Awww so many lovely thoughts from you all..thanks everyone.:o
There was good news and bad news from the fracture clinic...3 months at least to recover I am wearing a very attractive back brace now...so fetching!Hope it doesn't scare the boys too much tonight when they see it..I look like Robocop...the bad news is no more riding:( The bone has been weakened to much and will go completely if I hit it again...so that's it...nothing else to do ...haven't told RI yet..although have to say she hasn't even text me to see how I am even after I told her I had been to A&E..so am a little hurt by that.
Will call her later I suppose.
Anyway have to arrange for the boys to be collected
Take care everyone and Thankyou.

Oh what a horrible first fall! I hope you get better really soon, and don't let it put you off too much, as that sort of injury is just so unusual.. most of us fall and get bruised egos and probably stiff for a few days or so..:o Take care and make the most of the tea and sympathy..

Hi FR, really sorry to hear about your back and that you can't ride anymore. :( If you want to stay around horses why don't you have a go at driving? It's just as fun as riding (although I speak from limited experience) and there's plenty of disciplines you can do within the driving world. I'm sure there must be people around this area that teach driving.
Hope you have a speedy recovery,
OSC

Im so sorry to hear your story, you sound so very brave. It has shocked me, brings home how fagile we are in our lives and especillay with horses. At least you can enjoy horses still even if its from the ground, it could of been a different story. Best wishes to you and keeps us posted on your progress.

Hi FR!
My what a shock for you.
I hope you are not in too much pain, mate.
There were a lot of posts here a few months ago of Dr's suggesting people don't ride initially but in fact things were a lot better after 6 months or a year off.
Do as you are told in the meantime and you can always ask them to check again in 6 months time or so.
Heres wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thanks everyone
Am doing ok...the brace is a bit uncomfortable and heavy-but could of been worse. The no riding hasn't really sunk in yet..fall keeps flashing through my head so am not missing it at the moment.
Was really disappointed that the Stables didn't phone me to see how I was...and that I had to call them to tell them how I got on at hospital. They were very nice on the phone when I spoke to them and asked would I still be able to groom etc.. said I would see how I got on recovery wise.
Every body on NR has been so wonderful and nice and you have cheered me up no end.
Anyway just wanted to say thanks
Take care all.

Long story short..I have a fractured spine no riding for at least 4-6weeks..I'll know more tomorrow after I have been to the Fracture Clinic...
I chipped my bone and got no help/advice nothing. So im glad you have some support! I felt like it would be forever until i could ride properly, was at least 2 month til i was allowed on, and now im not riding PROPERLY but im getting damned ok agan:D
Im still in agony mind as i probably didnt rest enough. So you HAVE to stay in bed/chair, do gentle stretching, and TAKE IT EASY:D Dont even think about riding again until you have the all clear, then see how you feel in yourself!
Hope that was slightly helpful!
Very very sorry x

oh FR, I am so sorry, I posted my wishes for a return to riding when I had only read half your thread, I do apologise.....
That's such bad news, to go along with the pain. Thinking about you and hope you get your strength and mobility back soon.
Very best,
A.

.. and now I've gone and done it too. And (if you've seen my earlier thread) have had no support or enquiry fro YO although all the RI's were lovely. Got lifted out of yard in an ambulance and been hospitalised for four days!
Is there any good news? Yes, the fracture is apparently stable, and I asked about riding. 6 months.... to allow repaired bone time to get stronger. Seems sensible. Some doctors just say "no....."
But for the moment, the back brace is unbearably tight and uncomfortable, and its amazing how little I can do.
How are you getting on Faieri Rider, must admit your later posts seemmed more positive?

My goodness a lot of people are getting hurt. I hope you heal very fast.:D
You also sound like you are handling it well and that is a very good thing.
I am at 8 weeks...and sadly the bones are not knitting like they are supposed to. Sigh ~~ not so young any more and you get my age and older...takes forever to heal.
Am around every now and again....if you need someone to talk too.;)
