Pretty much everything. They carry dun, cream and tobiano pattern, red, black, bay, grey, and also some very odd shades known so far as 'mushroom' and not really identified as any one colour or another.

They don't carry sabino, as far as I know, or any of the overo or spotted patterns.

Chev,, do you have any photos of the "Mushroom" colors?

All about 'mushroom' Shetlands! (http://www.kellas-stud.co.uk/mystery.htm) :D

Looks like they are a variation on liver with flaxen at first glance - but I dunno. Intriguing stuff... (and lovely colour too) :D

Pretty much every colour except spotted! (for registered shets)

Wow,, I know they said they can't be Silver.... but many look like Silver or Silver with a cream gene.
What is really interesting to me... is there are quite a few Icelandic's with those same colors. In one of the older Eidfaxi Magazines...they were not sure what color to call the lighter ones (they look just like the Shetland's with that color).
Will look through them later to see what issue it is..just in case someone wants to contact them to talk.

Would love to have a half dozen good Quality Mushroom shetlands! Maybe some day!:D

Well, they've tested positive for red factor, not black - so they're chestnut based. And silver doesn't show up on a red base... and since they've bred black without the colour, it really doesn't follow the breeding patterns for silver.

Maybe now there's a silver test they'll test them for silver too. Would be interesting to see the results!

They are the same as Icelandics, any colour 'cept spots.

Does silver dun count as Mushroom? ;)

Silver dun... aargh!!! Silver dun is one of those terms that's used for all sorts (cream dun being another :banghead: ) from black duns through duns with silver to greys in interesting stages that are neither dun nor silver in reality!!

And it probably has its own definition in Fjords, and Icelandics... ;) :D

The weird thing about the mushroom Shetlands is that they don't fit any known genetic colour; they're not dun (no stripe or other dun factors, and dun on chestnut doesn't look like that at all), they're not silver (tested positive for red base) and they're not cream.

I have a feeling it's a bizarre variation of chestnut... but why they look that way is beyond me.

So is the term "cream dun" incorrect? I have a youngster this colour and he has a faint dorsal stripe. I can't wait to see how he looks in the spring when he loses his foal coat and winter coat. :)

Cream dun is a term commonly seen in shetland circles, which drives colour genetics enthusiasts mad, as it is VERY misleading. My experience of duns in shetlands shows that the colour of 'cream' dun actually covers two different colours - a very diluted chestnut dun and a palomino dun - as such, only the palomino dun could be said to be a true cream, as only that one has the cream gene in it - but I think in dun terms that is more truly called a dunalino?

You can see pics of dun shetlands on our website - we have creams (all chestnut based), bays & blues.

You're right Varkie... cream dun strictly speaking would be chestnut + dun + cream (so palomino dun, or dunalino).

Okay Chev what colour (apart from Butterscotch Angel Delight) is Ljósfaxi?

He is red dun I think on his papers, complete with dorsal stripe, a slight donkey cross and zebra legs in summer.

There are quite a few Palomino Shetlands about, but they are not common, not compared to black and Chestnut, piebald and skewbald.

No, that's a miniature. Spotting patterns are very common in miniature ponies, which, although they do have some Shetland ancestry, also have lots of other breeding mixed in. :)

Wally - he could well be red dun looking at the winter pic. He'd be flaxen red dun if so. The summer pic makes me wonder if he's palomino dun though - that's a very cream colour for red dun! Especially his face... which you'd expect to see a shade darker than the rest of him for dun.

Don't let anyone from the Shetland Pony Stud Book hear you say that, they'd all have a hissy fit! :D :D

Down here in Hants, when at the Reading Shettie Sales, we see quite a few of them - tho don't seem to see as many out showing.
