View Full Version : Advice and opinions needed for going in harness.

My horse has been trained to harness. He used to do Saddler harness show stuff, which I am not really interested in, but I do fancy the idea of being able to put him in a little buggy and take him around some quiet roads for fun.

I have zero experience, and would need lessons, but a friend pointed out that driving is particularly dangerous seeing as you have the cart-attatched-to-the-horse to consider should things 'go wrong'.

My personal appeal is for the variety of work, and I imagine it might be something like long reining your horse only with the luxury of being towed behind.

Advice and opinions needed please?

Do you know for sure that your horse has driven before? Personally unless I had seen it being driven, or knew for certain that it had been, I would treat it as having never driven before.

Get yourself some driving lessons first. You need to know what to do, and be in control at all times. It is a little bit like long reining but with more to think about and at a faster pace.

Try and find someone with a horse and vehicle you can have a go in. You will probably love it, and once you've learnt you will be able to drive your own.
