I was wondering if anyone ever made there own exercise sheet??? My share mare needs a new one and I was thinking about making her one as they can be about £20.00 plus.

Anyhow I've seen some waterproof hi-vz fabric for sale which approximately a 1.5mx1.5m square and looks ideal, get a few extra reflective strips and I reckon I could have it made for under £10.

Just wondering if anyone had any experience of making such things :) If you do is it easy:confused:

If you can use a sewing machine it is VERY EASY indeed to make professional-looking summer sheets and exercise sheets. The easiest thing is to use one that already fits your horse as a pattern, and to use it to identify the right sort of fasteners, or the right place to put attachments.

If you don't already have one to copy, maybe a friend does? If no luck there, buy an old sheet for 50p from a charity shop and use that to drape over and around your horse, then cut it out and sew it together with huge hand stitches to see how it fits. When it is right - there is your pattern.

Good luck and have fun - it is really http://www.cosgan.de/images/more/bigs/c006.gif to see your pone in stuff you've made yourself!

There's a great book available called "Make your own horse clothing" which has patterns in it for sheets, rugs and saddlecloths. The material is likely to be synthetic, so there is no need for sewing - you can gently melt the edges to stop fraying with a fag lighter! You can also get iron-on reflective strip - like you see on workmen's reflective jackets. Only sewing you need to do is for your fastenings - and a simple loop around the girth will do. A Hem around the edge will give a little extra weight and help stop it blowing about in the wind.

I use a hiviz sheet for hacking on the roads, and for schooling when it is raining as it keeps Sal warm and dry. The "normal" sheets are used to keep horses warm and dry when exercised (hence the name), and I know some people also use them on horses prone to Myositis/Azoturia, (where the muscles develop too much lactic acid (I think :o ) and go into spasm) during warm up sessions, to keep the muscles warm until they're working properly.
Hope that helps! :)

I made one, but out of an under-saddle sheet off ebay for a song.

If you do make out, I seriously suggest you make a quarter sheet, not a under-saddle/wrap around sheet. I've had all types and the quarter sheet (curves around the saddle) is SOOOOOOOOO much easier.

Looks like this -

The sheet is this shape-

It is attatched to the saddle by two velcro straps on each side and is darted at the back to contour to the horses bum. The tail flap is very useful and is held in place by a peice of elastic. There is also a fillet string. It's easy to put on and can even be rolled up to sit behind the saddle if not needed.
