okay, my first question involves jumping. i had always thought that you didn't jump in a western saddle, but i was talking to a lady on the phone the other day about her horse for sale and she said that she jumped the horse under a western saddle often. i'm confused!
my other question is - how do you use split reins? i tried out a horse a few weeks ago who had split reins and i don't think i used them correctly. i'm going to see her again and i don't want to look like an idiot :o . any suggestions?
thanks!

you jump in an english saddle not a western but you CAN jump in a western saddle, as long as you don't lean on the horses neck the horn isn't really a problem...i jumped in a western saddle a couple times, my english saddle was TO small for me so i had to ride in a western saddle for a while before i bought a new one and i jumped in it lol! its not as easy as in a english saddle but it can be done:) i can't answser you other question sorry

Yes, it is possible to jump in a western saddle, but not in any competitions that I know of! :) You just have to watch out for the saddle horn! As for spit reins, lay them over the opposite sides of the horse's neck and collect both sets in your hands or in one hand if the horse neck reins. If he doesn't, use the reins as if they were english.
You can also place the reins together in one hand with the tail trailing behind your thigh, but again, this only works well if the horse neck reins. Happy Trails!

Split reins are simply one rein leading from each side of the bit and are not joined together or attached to each other in any way in your hand. Happy Trails!

i found this on a website - they say this is the correct way to hold split reins - ignore the fact that it's a barbie :o

That pic didn't work, I have a lesson tomorrow, I'll try and get a picture of someone riding with split reins. Until then, picture this: Thake your reins, undo the buckle, put the right rein over the horse's left shoulder, and vice versa. Then pick up the left and right sets of reins. Oh, never mind, I'll ty to get a pic! :D

no worries though - today i had someone teach me how to use split reins. :)

"like normal reins" Grin:D
Split reins are not connected at the ends. Roping reins are like your "normal" english reins, used to keep them contained when the roper jumps off the horse. Some beginner riders are told to tie their reins when first learning, a very safe idea.
