i used to save the lids off my supplement tubs and punch holes in them so i could tie them up and smear black treacle on them, kept my pony amused for ages especially if you tie it up somewhere where it cant rest against anything and and swing and spin round.
not too great for horseys with white noses tho!

A plastic jug (or even an empty water bottle) filled with grain, or even a basketball/soccerball. Small tires (Like for go-karts) work as well -- my horse has picked one of them up a few times and thrown it a couple feet. When I went to the Kentucky Horse Park, one of the horses there had an orange cone in his mouth, and was hitting it against the wall :D

I used old boots with feed in them at the bottom.. anything that makes them think and 'food obsessed' keeps them occupied for hours!! I suppose old coats with feed in the pockets would have the same effect (may teach them that pockets are for raiding though... so maybe not!)

I had one horse who would play with a football in his stable for hours! Really annoying at three in the morning though - he used to pick it up and chuck it aginst the wall!

i put pete in over night last night and i decided to make a hole in his treat tub and fill it with hard feed , treats and chaff! it was just like a horse treat ball and he loved it! also hanging carrots, swedes , parsnips ect on bailing twine!

Hide carrots in a haynet or put a ball in a haynet on the wall for them to play with. My pony always found the dish cleaning brush amusing and played with one for weeks until it he trashed it. I think he liked the texture of it and groomed it all the time :p

Orange traffic cones, old tires...
I have a thick plastic jug with some rocks in it out there. I also have some big sturdy 5 gallon jugs that had an oill supplement in them; the babies seem to like them a lot too.
