My advice would be don't buy from a horse sales.

I know one person who has sucessfully bought from the sales but then he knows what he's looking for and is also very well known by most of the dealers that sell down there.

You just can't tell what you're buying, the impression I get is that the sales is where the dealers send the horses they can't sell off the yard.

For a first horse, my opinion would be, either buy from a reputable dealer or a private sale where you can try the horse several times.

The rest of it is up to you with regards to breeds, sex etc. Everyone has a preferance.

do not buy from a sale! the only reason why they are normally there is because there is something wrong with them, and also people tent to only buy them because they feel sorry for them , and they don't think.

you see, horse babe and me will buy one that we can bring on and sell and buy her a new horse. We will go along for the day.. probaly me ending going and trying the horse out and then horse babe will! if we cant find anything...we cant find anything. :)
Sheila and myself have brought foals from this sale for £40 brought them on then 5 months later sold them for £200 - £400. Are last on was blaze, who was beaten, and neglected. 6 months later we sold him for £200. Lovely chap.

i wouldn't buy from a sales. we bought my first pony a auction and i think we were lucky. she had he quirks and basically taught me to fall off. :D
regards to breeding sex etc, what do you normally ride and what do you normally like? 16hh+ isn't small, make sure the horse is bolshey, you can't afford for them to push you around. geldings tend to be more relaxed and laid back but there are mares out there that are calm too.
