Hi

I'm looking for some advice. I have a friend who lives in Africa (where horsey bits are hard to come by) who is looking for some supplements to help build a horses calcium levels and generally strengthen bones - this lovely mare recently gave birth but was allowed to feed the foal for too long which resulted in calcium deficiencey and loss of strength. Anyway this friend is shortly having a holiday in Denver and then New York - does anyone know of any horse shops in either of these two places where she might find advice and supplements?

I have also been riding a lovely mare whilst here in Africa but I rode today and she was bucking ever so slightly - it just puts me off a little but I was wondering what the best course of action is - my initial thoughts were to ride through it and encourage her to continue with what I had asked her to do i.e. trot. Its just excitment right?

Hi, loopy -

My RI always said Ride forward if the horse bucked, so I think you're doing the right thing.

What are you doing in Africa, by the way? Work? Holiday?

Hi Linda

My parents live in Accra, Ghana so I get to come out once or twice a year on holiday. I'm a student at Leeds Met in my third year so this has been an Xmas holiday with some work on dissertation and essays thrown in. I can tell you reading literature down by the pool in the sun definitely beats cold, windy Leeds. I would love one day to have the confidence to come out here and ride the hacks to the beach etc but I'm still working on that one.

A cheap calcium supplement is simple plain limestone flour/powder. Or alfalfa, which also has a high calcium content.:)
