I was wondering if I can register a horse who has all the appaloosa characteristics but isnt already registered as far as I know. I think I read that a horse showing all the traits but parentage unknown can be registered as a part bred?

My appaloosa? I believe was bred as a 'parade horse' (showing??) in France and I am his third owner in this country but he has no papers, if he was bred to show surely he would of been a purebred?

Anyway he is approx 14.3hh leopard spot, has white scelera, stripy hooves, mottled skin on muzzle genitals etc. In summer his spots are at a different height to the rest of his coat (cant remember which way round?). He also has quite typical conformation and is very admired by appaloosa lovers who cant believe he isnt registered. One lady said he was a great example of the breed.

So could I register him somewhere and in the UK who with?

Here he is with my 11 year old son riding him.

I would get in touch with the appaloosa society. I am keeping track of my appy x's sire because once he is graded as a suitable stallion (or something like that :p ) then my boy can be registered as part bred.

BUT i have heard that all you need is evidence of characteristic (sp?) to register them as part bred so i was going to look into that.

Not in Canada, but it may be different where you are. Topaz is out of a registered Appaloosa mare and a registered Quarter Horse stallion (an approved cross), but because we don't know her mother's registered name or number and we can't track her down, Topaz can't be registered, even though she's more Appaloosa like then most Appaloosas (coat pattern, mottled skin, white sclera, striped hooves, appropriate height and body type).

However, she was eligible for a Competition Permit, which would allow her to compete in Appaloosa Horse Club shows in all classes except halter classes, although her offspring couldn't be registered.

Thanks for all your replies, I think we can register in the UK but I have a feeling it is only geldings and neutered mares. I think Iread that omewhere also:rolleyes: . I suppose I can understand that as it prevents unpure or certainly unproven genetics entering the pure breds.

Why the displeasure? What do you have against this? Also I dont understand that you havent registered them because they are as pure as most of the appys there?
