One of the girls on my yard put Peter through a prelim test in the arena the other week and he went really well till he started to canter. After that everything went to pott. How can I get him to calm down. Think I'll spend this year working on him. He was supposed to have been doing the dressage tests at Holmside :(

I did lots of transitions in and out of canter. three strides canter, back to trot; three strides canter, back to trot. I found it help steady him as he didn't know when he would have to stop again. It took quite a long time tho, so perhaps there are better ways.

Yep this works, been doing the same recently but with lots of trot to walk transitions, now she trots with a steady pace and listens to me expecting me to do a downward transition rather than just running on.
Also make the schooling sessions interesting rather than cantering around the outside of the arena do circles, 1/2 10m circle back to track, figure of eight doing a simple change (back to trot then canter) but keep doing different movements in quick succession, this with lots of transitions keeps them listening.

Transitions, transitions and .... transitions, lots of suppling exercises, more suppling exercises...... and a few more until it isn't exciting or worrying for him and he can keep his balance.

Have you had his back and teeth checked, Scoobie exploded during and after canter and that was the cause:)

Thanks guys. This is what we have been doing for him. Will need to ask his young rider to help me out as I know she likes to take him to the paddock and jump him.
Yes he's fine Kath
Yesterday was just sooo funny (and not). I pinched him for a few minutes from his young rider who had been cantering and jumping him in the arena yesterday. As soon as I asked him to canter he started trying to counter canter. If he was not doing that he was leg yielding round the paddock  He just anticiapated everything before I even asked him for anything
Lesely I dont think he will be there this month
