Has anyone got an Equine Degree? Looking to do an Equine Degree? Or knows anything about Equine Degrees?
I have applied for Equine Science BSc at Warwickshire College, Moulton College, Hartpury, Lincoln Uni, Writtle, and have had offers from all, so could you perhaps give me as to:
* What you like/liked (course/campus etc.)
* What you don't/didn't like (course/campus etc.)
* Where else are you/did you look to do your degree? Why did you choose xxxx?
* How benificial was taking an equine degree in relation to applying and getting into the work environment?
* What specific prospects does it give you? Was doing your degree specifically at xxxx benificial to getting a job.
* How worthwhile have you found your degree?
* Any other useful info....
Any info greatly appreciated, Thank you:) :) :)

I did a BA in Equine studies at Warwickshire college, graduating in 1999. The college has changed a lot since I left. We used to go to Coventry Uni for some of our modules which was great as you got to be part of "proper" uni life as well as college, I don't think that happens now. My horse also lived in the polo school in my second year, that's now the library!
I really enjoyed the course although all of us on the course complained about the title. I did loads of business modules as they are useful and can be applied to any company equine or not and don't feel that the title of the degree reflected that at all, whereas some people did mostly science modules and ended up with a very different degree. I think that our complaints were a major reason for seperating the courses.
I lived on campus for my first year and my horse was on working livery at the college. Living in was fine if you got on with the people you are lumped in with. In my case they were incredibly bitchy and I was glad t be able to move into a place with my own friends for the second year. The facilities are excellent and if you don't have your own horse I would recommend booking some lessons anyway as it's not often that you will have the chance to use great instructors, facilities and horses in the same place!
In terms of jobs I have had since graduating I have worked as an account manager for an equestrian wholesaler, as a cliams advisor for a horse and rider insurance company and currently work for an on line and mail order equestrian retail company. The first job I got was really swung by that fact that I'd had a part time call cantre job whilst in my last year at college. They had loads of equine degree graduates apply but that made them pick me out for a customer facing role. My second job was definately down to my degree as they wanted someone with knowledge of injury, disease and rehabilitation as well as knowledge of the skelton & muscles etc. My current job was a bit of a fluke really as I know the MD.

I'm doing same as Briony, and I'm now in my final year, and can honestly say I've loved every minute!!
I lived in halls in my first year, lived out in 2nd year and now im back in halls again in my final year to get back into the social side of things! :D
I've also kept my horse with me on campus throughout my course and it's great because you can get as involved as you like with lessons and competitions or be left to your own devices and do what you want.
As with most of the Agri colleges you are in the sticks slightly so being able to drive is a HUGE advantage!! but i also really like the nightlife in Leamington and Stratford and there's always something to do!
Before choosing Warwickshire I went to look round Myerscough and Writtle. Didnt like Writtle at all, the equine unit was 2miles away as was the student livery and I couldnt drive in my first year so getting to lectures and to my horse would have been a real pain plus the place just reminded me of school too much.
Myerscough i really liked as well the facilities were really nice but Warwickshire won as everything is on campus so made life loads easier!
Job wise with the course you've applied for and the course I'm doing you can take a year out to do a work placement which I HIGHLY recommend. I worked in a Saddlery for that year, gained loads of experience, made great friends and have a better idea of what I want to do when i graduate and I have a guaranteed job if i want it when i do graduate.
overall big thumbs up!!!

personally id go Hartpury or Warwick. Have personal experiance of hartpury and known ppl at warwick (lynz) and my friends cuz.
I was at hartpury last year (NC) ..... was great (part from the nc bit..... was bit to easy for me but good for people who havent had own horses) But the fasilties are excellent........ couldnt ask for more, and nightlife is FAB! and most of the leactures are great and a laugh. Most of the riding instructors are good there too.
And im going bk to do my degree there this year (when i get my ucas thing in :rolleyes: ooooooops) hopefully.
