I just discovered that my TB loves clementines (aka mandarine oranges). Although they are tiny in comparison to a regular orange, is it safe to give him?
I have not read much on citrus fruits and horse health.
Thanks

Hi Sondra,
My thoroughbred is 27 years old, in the summer I give her a huge juicy jaffa orange neary everyday which she enjoys, in autum/winter she just loves her tangerines/clementimes. It does.nt seem to have done her any harm. the only little niggling worry that I have is, she suffers from really bad arthritis, and I do not know if the acid in the oranges affects this condition? But she loves them so much, especially summer, so why spoil her little pleasure!

My mare likes the odd clementine or satsuma, sometimes she'll eat the peel too (yuck).
She also likes banana's but her favourites are apples and carrots.

Mine has 3 oranges a week, skin pith and all. Loves them, will do no harm. She loathes bananas though - mushes them into the ground and looks at me as if I'm trying to poison her!

many horses love citrus fruits, and fed in moderation they are a safe, tasty treat for your horse!

I tried Sonny with clemantines as the horse in the next stable loves them (she's 28, so they can't be doing her much harm) next morning they were still in his feed container albeit a bit chewed so he'd obviously had a go and then spat them out!

Haven't tried my horse with citrus, but he eats zuccinis, and absolutely loves the green tops of carrots, even without the carrot attached!
