Eeeew - weeing in the box

Despite a friend of a friend saying she would never have geldings as mares are so much cleaner in the box, we are having some 'issues'.

Bless her little horse shoes - Rosie has got into the habit of pooing before she gets into the box - often 2 front feet on the ramp - poo - in. Lovely, what a good girl.

BUT the last couple of weeks she has pooped, walked into the box - Ive done it all up and within minutes she's peed. Yeuck! And it stinks - the smell permeates through to cab and its not nice. What makes it worse is that when I get home once I have parked up I cant always get the ramp down to clean it out

Any ideas? Do they do horse size nappies?????

Put sawdust down in the box - at least it will soak it up

Teach her to pee on command like the race horses do. Not sure how to do that though!

Sawdust is a good idea.

Hmm weeing on command? I kind of taught her to poo before she got in the box - much muttering, complaining and shoving her out the way with the shovel when she did poo in the box and lots of praise when she pooed outside - I guess if I can catch her weeing I could work on it? LOL. The flipping things we do!

Gave the van a good scrub today but stupid man who put the rubber matting it had the channels run back to front rather than to the side so the water could run out the door Think Im going to have to take it all up, dry it out and reseal as am sure waters getting in and dont want the floor rusting out just yet thanks!

It's a sign she's comfy in there - a lot of horses pee when they go into their stable. Really you should expect to clean it out every time you use it, just like mucking out a stable. If you can't get the ramp down when it's parked, can you park it the other way round?

She must definitely be relaxed in there. Frayne will never wee in public - even if we go out for most of the day for a pleasure ride she won't wee until we get back.

I would definitely get those mats the other way round to make it easier for you, then you can just throw a few buckets of water down and sweep it out.

Back in the olden days we always put a deep bed down in the box - straw or shavings - nowadays most people just seem to have the rubber mats. When I finally get my trailer I may go back to putting down shavings - does make it easier to get droppings out (Frayne normally treads them into the mats otherwise and I have to get the pressure washer out to get it properly clean).

Ali xx

relatively simple if you are around them frequently - ie won't work if they live out 24/7. method:

lay fresh bed of straw
bring horse in
horse wee's
you whistle a toneless repeating note whilst they wee
praise lavishly
repeat process twice a day, for weeks
horse learns to wee when you whistle

I have done it with race horses, can't be bothered with mine!

My friends new horse can do this apparently! When I get home I am going to have so much fun - I might take up whistling when we are riding, and when we are grooming and ...
