Vetran Showing?? Help me please as a showing (very) newbie!

Earlier this year me and OH rescued a little 11hh mare who was suffering from lami/neglect from my yard owners niece. We consequently bought her for a pitance and now she lives the life of riley with our shetland.

Any how I now think it's time for her to earn her keep as such, and get out and enjoy her life a bit! Before I go any further I am a complete showing novice (apart from best turned out at pony club camp haha!) so wouldn't know where to start! Really, I just feel mean taking everyone else to parties and leaving her behind.

Tilly is 22 this New Years eve and completely recovered from her lami and is scrubbing up nicely! She's 11 HH and passported as 'dark brown'. No breeding noted in passport just age. She is completely sound, and is a cheeky little whatnot with plenty of character! We took her as a companion for the shetland to a show in August and she was so chilled - a right pro. She even led OH up into the trailer she was so eager to get in!! I will include some piccys below..

Questions are really...

Does it matter that I don't know what breed she is?

She was obviously branded at some point with an 'E' on her side which is large - would this mean there is no point showing her? See picture below

I am 22 as well as her am I OK to show a 11HH? (do you have to be a young handler to show little ponies?)

Where do I start on what I have to wear?

Do you have to be registered with the vetran horse society to show at local shows (we don't really aim to enter qualifiers of anything)

Note her 'E' brand behind her withers...

Please feel free to criticise, and even tell me if it's not worth doing. Me and Til's are both thick skinned hehe

ETA : She has No scars at all to note - can't find one on her! (suprising for her age)

Scars, blemishes etc dont matter in veteran its all judged on condition, turnout and way of going/suppleness.

If you have no breed papers for her I would pull her mane and tail and trim off any feathers she has as without papers proving M+M status she will ahve to be shown as above.

Have a look on my page as I think that i have some pix of my welsh d x (not registered) pulled and plaited.

Nikki xxx

ETA pix for turnout examples, I know they are ridden but you will ge the general Idea

I would certainly take her out, she is in amazing condition for her age and that is what it is about!! I suspect the brand is one of the native pony ones, we have a New Forest with a similar H and that will be disregarded in showing. You don't need to belong to the Veteran Society unless you want to qualify. I think you can even do their first round shows without registering and can certaily do local showing.

Show her in a smart snaffle bridle and wear a tweed jacket, hat, shirt and tie, and beige trousers. You can buy unstrapped (not safety) hats by Horka from the internet fairly cheaply.

Good luck!!

Edited to add I don't actually agree with pulling and trimming as you only need to produce to type not prove breeding at the level you are looking at..produce her as a native type

She looks like a little sweetie!!

You are fine to show her re your questions about your age/her height/passport.

You don't need to know breeding and I would echo EML on all points.

I would get her a nice native in-hand showing bridle and produce her as a native.

For your first few times you can compete with out being registered, all it means is that if you win you can't qualify for the next round so it would be good for you both to get out and practice a bit first.

She looks fab for her age and I think its great that you've given this girl a new lease of life

we are affiliated vhs

you can show small pony!

child HAS to be 9 to show and then it costs you twice as much to register

and I'd def give her a go - you can enter VHS classes without registering to see how it goes - you can then affiliate if you like it

pony looks AMAZING

Thank you all for your replies.

To register with the Vetran horse society do you then need to know breeding - Sorry if some one has already replied this and I'm just being dim!
