Smile Abscess nightmare

My darling boy got an abscess 8 weeks ago. He came in hopping lame so I called the vet and as soon as they took the shoe off puss came out and he was fine.

1 week of poulticing and all was good. Shoe put back on.

4 weeks later same again....

This time a huge chunk was cut away to make sure everything was gone. It never seemed to clear up. So the vet decided to xray to rule out a keratoma which it did thankfully.

Now he can't go out in a field until may as he has a chunk out of his foot but can be ridden in a dry school or on the roads as he has all his shoes back on.

I am just wondering if anyone else has went through this and for any ideas to keep the hole clean and debris free whilst riding etc.

Thanks
