Rugs slipping back...?

Is there any way of stopping this?

Silvers rugs all slip backwards and end up tight on her chest - her 4"6 sweet itch hoody that is too small, her 5" well fitting silky cooler rug, and her oversized 5" lw turnout. The only one that doesnt is a fleece that is marginally too small.

They all end up looking like they are really really tight on her chest, but spacey at back (apart from the 4"6 which is outrightly small everywhere but it still slips back)

Might just be her build? You could try a bib whihc goes underneath her rug (sorry not sure of the proper name for them) They are supposed to stop rubbing/cutting in.

I used to have that problem in weatherbeta rugs with my mare. I had something called a bossy bib (http://www.bossysbibs.com/ they also have them on ebay) that stopped them rubbing her but they still slipped back. I have now changed all her rugs to horseware amigo and they don't slip or move on her at all. I guess it is just finding the right shape for the particular horse.

They are all different brands... she cant be this hard to fit a rug too...Saddles are bad enough

Only her sweet itch that is too small is rubbing, the others just leave a groove on her mane - but her sweet itch leaves fat grooves where it has indented in her copious fat layers

I was going to ask if the rug might be too big pulling it backwards with the excess dragging back over the tail as I see that very regularly on the horses round my way but you've covered that.

I'd love to see what people suggest for you

My guess would be the necks to big, have you got friends around that you can borrow rugs from?? Try a size up and do the neck up tighter. Will bring the rug forward to take up the extra length. It also means that its fitted to the neck rather then the shoulders.

Might not be the case in your situation but seems to be a common mistake to do the neck up slack..... I do them tighter and the owners like "o" but its to short now.....umm buy a longer one

Lol - Ive been trying all sorts - as tight as they go and sa slack as they go - still do it!

I think her indoor sweet itch one slips because it is too big for her... Well I say that. It is only marginally to long when just put on with all fastened at the front as much as possible... but is a size too big once it has slipped I think I might get some velcro and try making my own velcro fastening for the front - her lw turnout although slipping, does not do it as badly as that has a velcro front. I wonder if it just looked like it is slipping as she is so squidgy it sinks in the fat

When the rugs done to fit the neck it cant slip as the shoulders should stop it!! In this case I'd suggest the rugs you have arent cut right to fit, the necks cut are to big.. full stop. What breed is she?? Is she a lighter build?? Try amigo... borrow one if you can, its the only one that I can get which fits my Darty properlly. Masta and saxon are "ok" but strangly cuddly ponies are horrendously big in the neck.

A rug slipping is generally down to it not fitting right... not in lentgh but in cut, Horseware irland and fal are good samples of finer fit, weatherbeeta and masta of a broader fit.

Do you have any pictures of her to show her conformation ?
maybe give us an idea as to which rugs you've tried ?

I have a big shoulder/haunch rub problem on my arab. Masta, WB, Requisite don't fit. Only the rambo did (well it WOULD at that price ! ) but PE seem to fit him well too -> rugs which are cut higher up on the wither/closer around the neck. I've seen the fit of a few bucas rugs which also seem great but very pricey and hard to find over here.

I am very fond of nylon lined rugs (which avoid too much damage on long manes) but also allows the rug to move back to it's place a bit better than the standard cotton-lined rugs.

P.S coollers have a habit of stretching in the neck, wash and tumble it, then carefully pull out the lentgh and depth with some help without touching the neck.

Horrrible photo but conformationally probbably th emost useful I have

She is a 12hh Welsh X mare...

Rugs I have:

2 x 4"6 Rambo sweetitch hoodys - slip back, but could be because they are too short but miles... (Has one 4"9 new one for next year which fitted beutifully when tried on but know they shrink in the wash)

1 x indoor unbranded sweet itch rug which she wears indoors

(It was too deep so adjusted tummy and neck depth, but still slips from around chest - it has stretched the chest straps.

1 x cooler type rug with no neck again unbranded - also used indoors to prevent her rubbing tail off - slips same as above, this one is too big on her, but not unreasonabley so - it was supposed to be a 5"0 but would be more a 5"3.

1 x 5"0 LW turnout by Gallop - too deep, but doesnt seem to slip as badly as the others, but is sinking into her neck worse - It seems heavy compared to her - I think because of the depth - does have an overlap fastening as the front though with velcro

1X fleece and 1 x cotton sheet in 4"6 that are too small but neither slip - both requisite

1 x weatherbeeta stable rug 5"0 fits like a dream but not been cold enough to wear
1 x masta 5"0 mw turnout - again not cold enough but fits well.

Previous owner had a fetish for rugs that were too small... but 5" seems to be a bit risky as it is either perfect or too big! Dont want to order 4"9 though as it comes up tooo small normally!!

Oh... she ends up with a groove that runs all the way around her neck - if you go directly up from her near side chesnut in the photo, there is a groove in her mane - its about there - above the withers about 4-6inches up mane.

Here is a photo of the groove she gets in her fat

Now it can stay all day - even through rain!

When you find the answer please let me know as I have the same problem with Chanter. Weatherbeta Landa high neck was shocking, Masta is not as bad but still pulls and leaves the same mark as yours.

Going to your horse this weekend hoping to buy a 200g with neck that will fit and stay in place

And vice versa! I have found an overelapping velcro closure leaves the least mark - her rambo one is the worst for the line, but it slips the least (its miles to small). I did wonder if a combo without a neck seam was possible?
