Sorry a bit of a rant here.
I'm more than a bit frustrated at being told "what riders want in a horse and that they will only breed what they think is best."
But they will not listen to what the riders really want. I'm talking about the NZ Appaloosa breeding scene. It's a registry that is suffering and dwindling in member numbers and they're wondering WHY!
The breeders are so busy squabbling and flinging insults at each other over what they are each breeding with regards to colour, having hissy fits if a solid coloured mare (which exhibits other appaloosa traits) wins a halter class over a coloured horse, and moaning about why their horses aren't selling.
Well, as a rider, I like to put in some ideas about what I personally look for in a riding horse. And am constantly shot down in flames by the breeders telling me what I SHOULD be going for instead. These breeders might get their horses out in halter classes, but wonder why no one is buying them as riding horses.
There are some breeders out there who will carefully think about the market and breed appaloosas to what people will actually buy and compete on. But a sad majority of NZ breeders are still content to squabble and shoot down their potential market and buyers.
I have no idea if this is the case with other breeders and societies, but seriously, they're shooting themselves in their own feet, really!
Am I opening a can of worms with this one?
