Question Saddle bags / panniers

I know there have been a few threads before about which are best but can anybody recommend any particular ones?

I don't want to pack my horse up like a donkey but be able to carry water & maybe a few snacks, plus a few first aidy type bits. We're not doing endurance but we could end up (if my confidence keeps up!) going out for a few hours and I get pretty thirsty!

I think I would prefer ones that sit behind the saddle although I'm not sure why. I also worry that they will flap about in trot or canter or do they fix tightly enough somehow to not? I've seen one that looks quite nice but they do up with a buckle & I can't be doing with faffing around with a buckle.

I've seen the Shires ones in several places but OH is now keen on these:

I'm yet to form an opinion!

I have some pommel paniers so probably not much help! I like them, and they don't clunk up and down too much. I got them from an endurancie sort of site.

Hubby went through a 'picnic' phase and has soooooooooooooo many different types of cantle/pannier bags, some with water bottles some without - will have a hunt.

I have no experience of them but I do know Robinsons do one called something like "mac n snack bags"! They are like nylon waterproof panniers.

I have the Shires ones and frankly they are not great. They are not well shaped for use, whether on the front

or on the back!

Now my biggest problem is having no d rings on the back of my saddle. (Does anyone know if this can be done by a saddler?)

So i have always had them on the front. I currently have a stowaway, designed for hoof boots but room for bits and pieces. I also had a drinks bottle, but did away with this idea, it got on my nerves more than the cob.

What concerns me about too much weight on the front is the effect of tipping the saddle forwards. This may not happen with treed. But it does cross my mine being treeless.

Your other option is a saddle pad with pockets built in. This allows you to carry minimum items and have less bulk on the horse.

This is size of stowaway
