What do you think of this mare for loan?
As you know from my signature I am looking for a Shetland primarily to turn my pair of horses into a "herd", but it would also be nice for my kids to be able to have the odd pootle.
I have found a lovely little mare, she is retiring from breeding (she's 18) and is wonderful for children to handle and although needs restricted grazing in the summer (as do TC and Crofter) is in good health.
She isn't technically broken, but has had children "sat" on her and the owner thinks it wouldn't take much for the children to be able to have a pootle.
Now my kids are total beginners and not passionate as I am but do like the odd ride so this would suit, I guess. She has never kicked/bitten and is a star for children to handle.
Here she is:
TC would be delighted as he loves the girlies and hasn't shared with a mare since we moved yards (other than when the YO's yearling nips under the leccy fence!! )
She is being offered on permanent loan.
So what do you think?

I think that for what you want her for, it would be a good arrangement. Particularly the fact that she needs restricted grazing, as you don't have to worry about her needing more (or less) food than the other two.

The picture was taken at a weird angle. Do you have one from the side?

Oh much more flattering. And yes, she's a cutie! Lucky kids.

She's gorgeous! She'll need to loose a little around her middle, shetlands founder quite easily. She reminds me of a little shetland i used to look after

She's lovely. What did the owner say she'd need in order for your children to be able to ride her?
Only thing that concerns me is I'm sure I've read in your previous posts about you only having 2 acres? 3 horses on 2 acres is an awful lot even though they need restricted grazing. Because of this you are going to have to be even more careful as they will basically be eating new shoots of grass which isn;t ideal for laminitics.
The reccommendations for acrage for a draft horse is 2 acres, then its plus 1 acre for every other 'normal' type horse.

If you've got the time, cash and field then go for it and I think she'd be great

Neither would I if that was the only reason I was getting her, but as I said before, I am getting her primarily to turn my pair into a "herd" and because I want her. The children being able to ride occaisionally is just a bonus.
Regarding the acrerage, I have part of a huge field, so if the worst comes to the worst I could pay for a little more....
