Homemade Horse Treats

Has anyone found any good horse treat recipes lately???

My horse really loves peppermints, and so I found this treat recipe for valentines day, and I think I might use it...looks like something he would LOVE!!!

Valentine Horse Treats

1 (8 oz) c. grated carrot
1 (8 oz) c. grated apple
2 tbs corn oil
1/4 (2 oz) molasses
1 tsp. salt
1 (8 oz) c rolled oats
1 (8 oz) c. flour
Peppermints

Combine first 4 ingredients.
Blend well.
Fold in remaining ingredients and blend.
Roll out onto a lightly floured surface.
Cut into hearts.
Put a peppermint into middle.
Bake on cookie sheet in 350 degree oven 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned.

I'm gonna try them. I think it would be cool though if everyone shared homemade horse treat recipes. Horse treats are expensive!!!

Stacey

I followed the first recipe and made some 'valentine treats' for my boy. I was really pleased with myself and proudly took them to the yard. I thought I would test them out on a few of the riding school horses before I went up to him - the all licked their lips and nodded their heads; a sure sign of approval! When I offered one to my boy he promptly spat it out! How fussy can a horse be?

^well, ET is really fussy. We had some treats at the show this weekend, and I gave him one, and he spit it back into my hand. Anything that doesn't have a peppermint in it is not acceptable for him.

I must be tight fisted, a home made horse treat is a big clump of nice green grass (the stuff that grows just out their reach) twisted up real tight with maybe a supprise peppermint or two...

I keeps them busy for a while....

err, yeah, my kids know to pick dandelions coming home from school!

I'm such a cheapskate but Kazz does love them! Oh and when the mint plant gets big and needs cutting back Kazz loves the cuttings!

When it was hot over the summer I made my horses some gaint iceblocksThey loved them,
What I did was mix about a tablespoon of molasses(you can use treacle or golden syrup as well)with about 3/4 of an ice cream container of water.
And then I added some cut up carrots, apples, turnips etc.And froze it

Does anyone have a coconutty recipe? I discovered by accident that Willow loves Bounty bars but they're well sugary, even if I pick all the chocolate off first (with my teeth of course...) so I'd quite like to find a healthy alternative!

Love the horse lolly idea Dina

I know this is an ancient thread btw, just thought it was better than starting a new one because of the recipes on here already.
