can you pinpoint what it is he objects to in the pelham? if it's the amount of curb and poll action then a kimblewick may work, but if it is just the fact of them then it won't, as it is a milder pelham - less leverage, but still curb and poll pressure.
what curb chain are you using? sometimes just changing to a leather or elastic one will be enough. petal doesn't do metal curbs at all, only a leather one.

do try the leather curb - it makes a big differnce to petal in the double, it's like taking the handbrake off. cheaper than a kimblewick too, if it works.

Kimblewicks are part of the pelham family. they work mainly on the poll, jaw and mouth and . . . er :-)

i have a kimblewick for times i need a bit more braking power and i like it, i have the slotted one and tend to use the top slot as it packs abit more of a wallop but doesnt really engage the curb. nice bit, i like it.

I had this same problem with Sam when I tried him in the Kimblewick - any slower and he would have been cantering backwards

I have him in a Waterford Hanging cheek snaffle and have been succesfully schooling him in this for the past few months and this past one month over jumps - he too was incredibly strong and tanky while jumping. We are going to try jumping in a normal snaffle again next week to see if all the extra schooling has paid off. He will either go nicely or realise he is back in a snaffle and take us both for an impromptu gallop
