Hi there yes wellies are fine to ride in but I wouldnt suggest jeans as they can nip your legs also not good for saddles try jogging bottoms or stretch type leggins to start with. Good luck with the riding

Wellies are not OK - they are too wide, and if you fall off they can get stuck in the stirrup and then you get dragged. With trainers, the danger is that your foot goes right through the stirrup.
Any sort of boots or shoes with a heel are ok; you can get special riding trainers too, with a heel.
Perhaps you could borrow things for the first few rides, or get them second-hand if you're a smallish size; then if you decide not to carry on, you could probably sell them for what you paid for them.

Heels!!!
LindaAd is right. I was also told never to ride without shoes with heels coz then you cannot slide through the stirrup and get caught in it if you fall. Some of my friends used to wear old Doc Martens for riding.

NO!!! The horror of wearing hiking boots and trainers when you're riding! A couple of months ago, a man riding wore his hiking boots while he was riding, and fell off when the horse started cantering. He was dragged around the arena for almost an entire round. Not pretty....

We live in our Blundstone boots. Great for walking if you have to dismount and lead, no skidding around on smooth soled riding boots, But slim enough and with a right heel to allow a proper foot position.
Steel toes too for those rampaging Fjords!!

The only wellies safe for riding have heels and are as expensive if not more so than a cheap pair if riding boots. I have two pairs of leather ankle boots, neither of which are "riding boots" I wear them with chaps for riding, polish them up and wear them with trousers when out and about. The important thing is the heel.
In the summer I often ride in a pair of soft cotton walking trousers as my jods are too hot. Jeans are not a good idea as apart from anything else the crotch seam tends to rub in unmentionable places!

i wonder if it is only english saddles that make jeans rub, because western riders wear jeans when they ride all the time
oh, and a quick question - do you need a bigger heel on your boot if you're riding western?

Just get a pair of dirt cheap rubber riding boots. You can pick them up for around £25 and they're ok for getting dirty around the yard in.
I've only ever ridden in long boots but friends of mine have found it awkward when they first wore long boots so it's best to start early. If you're serious about riding its likely you'll end up wearing them at some stage anyway.

robinsons mail order catalogue sell the rubber boot even cheaper than that. Doc Martens are OK though.
I sometimes ride in tight stretch jeans which are quite comfy. SOme leggings can be a bit thin, but jogging bottoms should be OK, just make sure they are not too slippy for the saddle.
