Manege surfaces

Guys - I'm in the process of having a manege built at home. The guy who is doing it recommends 4 inches silica sand and 2 inches rubber - does that sound about right? Is it deep enough? Thanks all.

We keep minimum of 6" of sand in our outdoor but its usually a bit deeper, i believe the surface has to be min 6" for insurance reasons!

There are many surfaces out there! We're having ours built as I type (well, not literally you know) but I'm going to get samples / advice from the various companies. There are loads in the back of Horse and Hound - and some in Horse and rider. I want the one that doesn't freeze easily - but also you have to look at how much use its going to get. Ours will only have OH and myself using it - so maybe we won't need the ultra hard wearing surface (unless I decide to take in liveries in the future.......).

When you say insurance Pinkypug, do you mean in terms of wear and tear on the horse, or risk of falling of the rider?

i know a variety of people with a granite dust layer with rubber on top. you have to be careful that its not too deep so with rubber too i would have thought that sounds ok.

we have just had a menage built at our yard. There was 6inches of sand and they mixed in a fuzzy felt type material with the top layers. It was very deep at 1st and has been rolled most days but is starting to settle now really nice to ride on

Oh yeah - isn't that hemp? Not sure. Anyway, thanks for all your replies. Initially a company that I approached wanted £20k for a 40 x 20 and to be honest I couldn't afford that. The guy that I'm using now is charging 12k and he's taken me to see a few that he's done and chat with the customers and they all seem really pleased.
