3.5 tonne lorries

Am looking into buying a 3.5 tonne lorry so i can drive it on my regular license. Anybody got one and what things do i need to look out for? I have been advised that those that have ifor williams or otherwise containers on van chassis are not so good as the height of the chassis means that the ramps are very steep and although the back ramp would be ok the smaller side ramp is a bit hair raising! Is this true of all of them? I am looking for something that will fit a 15hh HW cob and i don't want to spend over £3000 on it- my hunt has not been particularly successful so far- where are all the decent 3.5 tonne lorries hiding?

The Renault Master horseboxes are very popular but I doubt whether you'd be able to buy one on your budget as they really hold their price well.

Have you looked on eBay for a small box?

hi just a word of warning the new licenses dont allow you to drive a 3.5 ton ive been told by DVLA could be wrong but it goes on maximum laiden weight of the wagon and they said a horse box wont be less than 3.5 ton loaded. If im wrong someone tell me as id love a small wagon but DVLA put me off.

I think u can drive a wagon if when loaded up is 3.5 ton or less, again I think thats the idea as i have been looking for a 3.5 ton wagon aswell.

I have had a look at the equitrek wagons and the small one once loaded is just less than 3.5 ton so I think that would be ok to drive on a normal licence. If im wrong can someone else shed light on it?

The small boxes are made to be under 3.5t laden so can be driven on anyones car licence. Be very careful though in buying as most will not carry two horses and still be within the legal weight.

I know a couple who took their newly purchased 'under' 3.5t to the weightbridge and found that it would have gone overweight with their fairly small horse, tack and themselves Fortunately they were both older so were able to have the weight upgraded to 5.5t and so use it.

I love the Master conversions, but they are pricey. Try Ebay and also the SALE forum here: http://horsegossip.proboards54.com/index.cgi ... Think £4-5000 is more likely than £3000 for something that is correct & safe.

i agree about the weight issue- i've been looking to upgrade to a horsebox from my Ifor Trailor but the 3.5 tonne when you factor in the weight of the actual box, diesel, tack etc and yourself leaves no weight allowance for a horse ! Even a 4.5 tonner is dodgy imo.

i've been looking on horsedeals and horsemart

http://www.horsemart.co.uk/HRegion/A...tsHorseBox.asp

i dont think for £3K you'd be able to buy one of the renault master ones- cheapest i've seen is £10K for one of them.

I don't think any 3.5 tonne box is suitable to carry more than one horse or two small ponies.

I've seem some little boxes fitted out with cookers, sinks, seating and sleeping facilities. These are probably over the legal weight limit before a horse sets foot on the ramp!!!
