Ridden hunter classes

Ok I really want to do some ridden hunter classes this year with my boy, I think he would do well in them and they actually look quite fun

So, I have never done any kind of showing classes before so tell me what gear I need, what bits can I not use, what should I be wearing and so on. And can anyone tell me exactly what it entails. I wanna start getting prepared now while we concentrate on our schooling so that we are all ready to go. We will be partaking in middleweight classes.

Thanks

You after doing show hunter or working hunter?

Rider:
Velvet Hat with flesh strap
Tweed Jacket
Tie
Shirt
Beige/Canary Jods
Long boots
Brown Gloves
Cane
Hair Net

Horsey:
Flat canvesson Bridle / Double depending
Brown Tack - preferable Leather depending on level

Show Hunter Class normally consists of group show - walk trot canter both reins. Then individual show - i normally keep it short and sweet but make sure trot each rein and canter - long side extend your canter

Some shows might do strip and conformation
Some might have judge ride.

Most of all enjoy

show hunter involves no jumps

Working hunter you will do jumps first. When everyone has jumped you get called back in the ring as long as you completed jump section. You then proceed like the show hunter class - walk trot canter together then line up then do you individual show. Then walk around together again why they make their decision and bring you in in order of your placings.

Again might be asked to strip horse and do trot up.

Scores can be 50% jumping, 20% ridden, 20% manners, 10% conformation

Not taken part in WH but i think your only eliminated if you or horse fall. Jump down or refusal i think just effects points/score.

Thank you all that Nookster - sounds simple enough, although I am not keen on wearing Beige or Canary joddies - they make my arse look huge

We will do both Working Hunter and Show Hunter but will start with Show methinks

You will love it, i used to do working hunter and Ridden hunter on my old horse all the time.

also worth noting depending on the level of the class some Judges will ride your horse too.

Good Luck, also a short idddividual show is always better,

Having done both I can agree with whats been psted above. I wear light beige with silver tweed and my champion airvent hat (love that hat lol)

Working hunter if you hit a jump just affects you placeing really unless you ridden show really makes up for it. Only eliminated as said above if you or harse cop it

I use a pelham with double reins for Kia as the collection is better for both showing and jumping. Its just a rugby pelham I use as he is more comfortable in it than a proper double.

I also know of a smallish show that will run a ridden hunter with no jumps in May if your interested in a date to work towards

You'll probably find in hunter classes, both flat and workers, that you won't do a 'show' - a judge ride is far more common.

Ohhhhhhh oh oh oh oh oh........ I would LOVE to come along, you can keep me right with what I am to do and it will give me something to work towards. Only problem would be getting there as I have no trailer yet

ETA - and I was thinking of getting Arion a Mullen Mouth Rugby Pelham because I have a sneaking suspicion he is not very happy in a jointed bit at all.

I havent taken Kia to countly level or anywhere near it (he has too many scars and is too small) so I havnt had to have someone ride him yet. I just did walk trot canter on both reins then a good gallop round the ring and back to the line up.

M i think I know where you could hire a trailer, dont know if the big boy would fit into mines..... Jens Tyler was scraping the roof

When I get a schedule through I will copy it for you!! Its in Stonehouse 10 mins from my yard!!

With Show Hunters it depends what level you're showing at as to whats involved.

For local shows it tends to be as described (w/t/c/cor/c then show) and the turnout standards are sometimes less precise.

At county level it's a bit different. You still start with w/t/c change of rein then canter & gallop along the long side of the arena (helps to have a bit of ring craft for that bit - everyone wants to get themselves in a good spot to be seen by the judge). Then you all loiter around whilst the judges line up horses in a provisional order.

After that one judge will ride each horse whilst the other checks the confirmation (remove saddle, stand horse up for the judge then walk away & trot back). After everyone has been done its all ride around & the judges call the final line up. For RHIS classes 1 & 2 qualify, for HOYS it's just 1st that qualifies (unless already qualified when it goes to 2nd).

As well as yourself you'll need a groom in the ring too & they should be properly dressed & wearing a hat.

For workers, after the jumping phase (which is over rustic fences and some spooky fillers sometimes) the show phase is pretty much the same as above but they score the show phase as well & add the points togeather so it's a little less judgemental than pure showing.
