Question about trailer derating

The trailer that I'm in the process of buying currently has the standard plate stating the maximum laden weight to be 2600kg however in order for me to legally tow with my xtrail I need to get it downgraded to 2000kg - no change to the trailer spec but just a formal agreement not to load above that weight.

I'm hoping to get the trailer soon but apparently the new downgrading process can take up to 3 weeks so the trailer place have suggested sending the plate away but still delivering the trailer in the meantime. This means that when I eventually get the downgraded plate I can get somewhere local to fit it to the trailer.

Does anyone know if you care allowed to use a trailer for transporting if it has no plate?

Central Scotland peeps who have downgrated their plate - where did you get this done and was there a cost involved? I'm thinking I may just take delivery as is and get it done through a local distributor?
