Loading youngstock advice

I need to load an 18 month filly & 8 month filly with no experience of loading 'young ones'. Can anyone tell me what to expect i.e more reluctant? or do they travel better?

Also which side of the trailer would you put the 0lder filly? There doesn't seem to be enough front support for the 'lil one' to lean against!

Oh the 18 month old has travelled from Holland a year ago & the foal has never travelled & can be quite 'snorty'

Thanks.

Based on my experience yesterday of loading my yearling, as long as they lead well and understand pressure release, you should have no trouble. Kai walked straight on, little angel Apparently he slept the whole way to the new yard (the box I hired had CCTV).

I assume your fillies tie up? If not that could be an issue. Put the larger on the drivers side of the trailer.

Have a few helpers and kindly but firmly lead her on, if two people can cross their arms behind her if she is reluctant. Be aware a youngster in a trailor can be tempted to try and jump the breast bar. Some food once actually in the trailer is always a good bribe, but I find trying to tempt up a ramp with food isnt always the best way.

A few loading sessions before the actual day is really the best way so they are both confident and you are!!!! Make it a normal thing and with no fuss she she doesnt realise it is anything to be scared of, lead her in as if you were leading into a stable.

I would be tempted for the first time moving to shut the back doors just in case she managed to turn around and tried to jump the ramp.

Leave yourself lots of time so there is no rush or stress.

Thanx for replies, i thought the larger filly on drivers side & perhaps put her in first. i think also the less people the less harassed they will feel, practice with the trailer isn't possible until we get our own, just borrowing for now

The 8 month filly leads but hasn't been tied yet! Just hoping it all goes smoothly.

I bought a 10mnth old gelding in 2007 that hadnt travelled before.

It took us 2 and a half hours to get him loaded as he just wasnt sure about this big box thing

Eventually after a lot of patience he loaded and he never moved the whole journey 2 and a half hours home.

As long as you leave plenty of time before the journey incase they dont load. Can you try and get them used to a trailer/lorry before hand??
