Someone with you whether loaded or not. Not loaded is better practice for the test.

Be very careful if the car and trailer don't come into the category you need a licence for you will not be allowed to sit the test. It also has to basically be tall and wide enough to make to use wing mirrors for everything...I will try and find the notes we got when SFS sat the test. I know a lot of people were turned away for not having suitable tow vehicles/trailers.

The only places you can be tested are the centres where they examine HGV tests, usually in major cities. We phoned around companies that trained HGV drivers to find a B+E trainer.

EML, thats very interesting, we have a local company here who do training and testing, last time i enquired (summer last year) i was told that to sit the test you have to hire one of their vehicle/trailer combinations, that was an additional cost of £100 on top of your test cost!!

They wouldnt let you sit the test in your own vehicle is it a requirement or are you allowed?? Its maybe worth contacting them again...

you can sit the test in your own vehicle/trailer combination so long as it meets the requirements... inc the extra wing mirrors i think but don'tquote me on it
but no - you can't tow your trailer unloaded - it's not the load inside that they go on - it's the load capacity

SFS did it in our Disco with IW510, local training company uses Discos with box trailer.

Ideally do it in your own as the examiner then sees you mean to transport horses. SFS was one of the first to sit the test and had a regional chief examiner who chatted about how towing withahorse in was going to be very different to towing up to speed in city traffic!!

Edited to add normal wing mirrors do but you have to provide an additional inside one for the examiner...not quite sure we carried one but it never even got put up. You also have to wear a hiviz vest for the manouvering and hitching and unhitching as well...there are generally a lot of lorrys doing the same so makes sense to be seen!

Well the vehicle and trailer I mentioned, belong to the driving instructor. He is a fully qualified instructor and just gone into teaching trailer tests. He has 3 people throught the test and passed already with this vehicle combination. As long as it make me gain the B+E category then this is ok,whcih I am sure it will else he wouldnt be using it

ETA: Have just spoken to the driving instructor as I have booked my assesment day. I asked him if his trailer is ok for the test, and he said as long as the trailer you take your test in is plated up to one tonne, then when you pass you are able to tow up to seven tonnes...just saying what hes saying as i dont know myself!!
