In Hand Showing

I am hoping to show Penny in hand this summer, and I was hoping I could get some advice on the do's and don'ts for showing.

What do I wear?
What is the procedure for showing?

I know that this one is a bit vague but I am sure there are some knowledgeable people out there!

here is a thread with some good info on what goes on in an inhand class.

what breed is penny? how old is she? do you know what classes you want to enter?
what you wear, what she wears and how you prepare her will differ according to what class you are in, but the procedure for an inhand class is the same for all classes.

Penny is a 6 year old Coloured Irish Cob so I am hoping to enter the coloured cob classes that we have on the Isle of Man. She is 15.2hh so I think will just be okay for in hand cob.

Thanks for the link I'll have a look.....

hey not entirely sure *** type of jacket you would have to wear in these classes but for any type of showing beige or canary coloured jodhpurs should be worn not white, with black or brown jodhpur boots. Also wear a shirt and tie, i think you would get away with a coloured browband and you can match your tie to the colours in your browband, you can buy an in hand bridle but for your first shows your normal bridle with a simple bit a sanffle or a bradoon will do with your reins brought over her head. This is what i use in hand showing, there are also leather show leads you can use instead of your reins but not really necessary at local levels.
In the class you will only have to walk and trot your horse and it i a good idea to practise trotting your horse up in a straight line at home beforehand leading your horse from the left as normal and in the ring you walk round on the right rein so your horse is between you and the judge. The normal procedure for an in hand class is you all walk round the ring in single file try to keep your distance from the ohter horses to make yours stand out. then the judge will ask you to all line up in the middle. then the judge will call you out one at a time and you lead your horse out and stand her up for the judge, you can also practice standing your horse up at home the idea is not to stand the horse square so the the judge can see all four legs from either side. Then the judge will tell you what to do now usually u will walk your horse away from the judge and trot back towards the judge if this is the case then trot your horse towards the judge then past the judge an around the back of the line of other horses and back into your place.
Cobs in show classes usually have hogged manes but if you do not want to do this then plaited should be fine.
Above all dont forget to SMILE!! and be polite to the judge
hope this helps i know ive written alot!!
good luck!!!

According to the turn out rules for cobs according to

www.smoko.co.uk (The Show Ring)

No coloured brow bands, and cobs should either be shown 'traditional', or hogged, if they are coloured.

Sorry if that last post was shortm but suddenly got visitors
Great info on the display, Jovi, couldn't have put it better my self.
I show in hand, using a pelham, with 2 reins on, and wear a hard hat, hacking jacket with shirt, tie, cream trousers, joddy boots and gloves.
Is your horse a traditional, or has her mane been pulled, because the trads look absolutely fab, with everything flying as they are trotted out.

Have alook at that web site, its got loads of info on showing, and turn out, links to various societies, shows etc.

Hope this has been of some help.
