Harris tweeds are a smart job ( readily available 2nd hand) these equestrian firms these days stick there label on a poorly made tweed jacket and charge the earth!

Showingnutter is right, a stock is never correct in the showring unless it is an evening performance. Always wear a tie.
Buying a good quality tweed is a brilliant investment, and always makes you stand out. Mrs Candy is my personal favourite ( www.mrscandy.co.uk), however Showing Selection, Pretty Ponies, Designer Browbands, Alexander James, Ponies on Parade and Le Beau Cheval are just a few others who do excellent quality tweeds with interesting, correct checks through them. They can be expensive, but they look 100x better than a blue tweed jacket.

I have a caldene southwold which is wool, but not particularly heavy and while it is brown, it has green hues. It ranges in price (depending on the size you need and where you get it) from about £70 - £120.
You can't beat going to a tack shop and seeing the tweed in the flesh as you can see the true colour (very rarely the same colour as what is seen on the net due to colour differences on computers), see if it fits and whether the colour suits you.

I think the wearing of stocks out hunting is the theory that they help protect the neck (back when stocks were bulky and properly tied). Some hunts have dress codes stipulating that stocks are worn with tweed (cubbing season I think this applies to) as well as black/navy jackets.

Fit and cut is way more important than price IMO. A well fitting £30 jacket will look better than a £130 jacket that is too big/small. That said, buy the best that you can afford - usually a more expensive jacket will have a better cut.
I went down the made to measure route because I'm not an off the shelf shape, but I agree with all Show Business' recommendations. They come up on ebay at times, so it's worth keeping an eye out. I would also add in Caldene, but only a pure wool, not a mix.
I had a Caldene pure wool blue tweed - lovely, great quality and good fit, but technically not the best colour.
I then bought a Dublin Canberra - too lightweight, sizing way off and not a good fit. No photos on the computer of this.
Then I had a jacket made (by Mum, which kept the cost down),
then a Caldene Belvoir Keepers Tweed - gorgeous jacket, just the wrong shape for me.
I got my new M2M jacket and have been able to list the latest Caldene on ebay. You can't beat the fit of a good M2M jacket, and it didn't cost me that much.

I have just brought myself a lovely Mears tweed jacket from www.showingshop.co.uk. I also spoke to Michelle to ensure delivery could be made in time and to discuss sizes - she was really helpful.
