What age does a horse have its adult colour?

Odin was a bright bay last year with black points and was very very bright and his winter coat was also bright bay BUT his summer coat coming through this year seems to be very dark bay almost black. He will be 3 this year. Is it possible that he will end up a dark bay instead?

Most horses I know have varying coat colours from season to season, especially bay, brown and chestnuts!! Is it just that the summer coat is comming threw?

well no like I said when i got him he was in winter woolies and a bright bay, as he then moulted before last summer he remained bright bay and his summer coat last year was bright bay, his coat remained bright bay as he went into his winter coat. It is only now that he is moulting again that I've noticed his fur on his neck (which is now almost summer coat only a couple more groomings needed) is very very dark almost black and various parts of his body where winter fur is coming out are also very dark

He's always been bright bay

Murphy my bay goes a gingery colour in winter, then a dark bay colour just as we come into summer, then he is a bright bay in his summer coat, maybe this is what Odin is doing?

Tia's coat ranges from very bright bay through to very dark bay throughout the year too. Sometimes her coat looks almost red in the sun, then other times it is almost black.

This was her last spring when her summer coat had come through

This is her winter colour

I also love the bright bay colour, but Tia's coat looks best when it is dark with bright bay dapples

They can change quite a bit over the years and bay shades can most definitely change from summer to winter coat (it's less common for them not to change)

Inca is 3 this year, she was born black, her foal coat was an odd browny colour, then she went back to black. Now her winter coat is pretty much black but her summer coat is a really odd colour - like dark chocolate - never seen another like it! ..trust me to breed a weirdo!

Greys are the main ones to change substantially as they get older
