We done our first ever Classical dressage on Sat, so I dont feel qualified enough so to speak to answer fully.

But we really enjoyed it and the scoring is done differently and more exact for Gaits/Rider/General Aspects, much more insight IMO.

My horse came 7th out of a class of 23 in the Prelim 2A with my friend Amy on board, with a score of 63%, we found the classical much more enlightening and alough you are being judged on EVERYTHING overall I found it less daunting than being judged on particular movements.

Would def go again, infact we are booking in for the next one at Wix in April, havent seen them anywhere else in our area, but would def be interested in going to more.

Arrrgh! The Classical V. Competition debate

It is quite possible to train and ride in a classical manner AND compete to a high level. Sadly there are many who do not ride the way we might wish to ride the horse, but then again my idea of classical may not be the same as the next rider's/trainer's!

Or put it another way - there are some classical riders whose methods I would endorse and those I definitely can do without - even in 'Classical' riding there are those who would not agree with each other.

Equally there are many who would not particularly profess to ride in a 'classical' manner and produce a lovely harmonious picture, for whom I have great respect. There are also those who ride at a very high level where I respect their achievements but despair of the judges who thought it was harmonious and correct and allowed those achievements to occur.

Ok this is my score sheet I only done the walk and trot test, my friend done the canter test on him, but she has that at the mo.

Gaits
Walk split Med and Free, we got 6 and 4 respectively, trot is working and we got 6, total 20 points out of poss 40.

General Aspects Are done first impression and 2nd impression, then average score, all out of 10 to.

Responsiveness and attentiveness 6 6 6

Correct contact 5 5 5

Straightness and correct alignment 5 6 5.5

Forwardness in correct rythm 5 6 5.5

Balance 6 6 6

Overall suppleness and freedom thru back 5 6 5.5

Quality of transitions 6 6 6.

Total 39.5 out of possible 70

Rider marks out of 10 to.

Correct use of hands 6

Correct use of legs and seat 6, no spurs are allowed at this level.

Gen position and balance 6

Harmony between horse and rider 6

Accuracy of test and figurework 7.

Sub total 31, x 1.5 = total 47 out of poss 75.

Bonus marks for snaffle bit and cavesson noseband are awarded 2 for each, we had a flash, but had a snaffle so got 2 bonus marks.

In the canter tests, obviously you add canter to Gaits and spurs are allowed, but you get 1 extra point for not using them.

My grand total out of a poss 189 was 108.5

Which was 54.25%.

Judges comments where Some nice moments with a calm obed horse. Needs to come onto contact a little more to gain better marks.

So no the whole movements arent marked for each one, but they are looking at everything overall.

We really enjoyed it and are going to the next one in April.

meme, look like ashen equestrian centre is going to holding quite a few classical dressage clinics with michaela morris. She was supposed to be judging on saturday but was called away so another judge stepped in. We have a lesson with her on saturday up wix way again. You will probably find her juding most of the Wix ones.

We was thinking of getting to Ashen at some point, I used to have lessons with Becky, and my current instructor was trained by her.

But most of the dressage show's Becky is holding clash with us going away and TB 2nd rounds, till later in the year, and we was thinking about one of the clinics to, which would be handy.

Cant see when Wix is holding CD after April, do they have it regularly?

its a bit of a trek, but it sounds like a fab place, the website shows it doing so much...
the classical comps aren't held very regulary and saturday was a pretty poor turnout (suppose it was because of the weather) but we went last year and it was packed to the rafters, yet still with a strange yet reassuringly serene and calm atmosphere... it's just a shame they can't hold more comps, but as discussed on this thread the judging is completely different from BD and there aren't so many "classical judges" If i hear of any more or you do i'll let you know and vice versa.

Yes definately, but Wix so far is the only one I know of.

Takes about 45mins in a car to get to Becky's from around where our yards are, so not to bad in a lorry, we go further than that.

I agree with what LGD said earlier. I'm probably really late into this post ( looks at date ) My attention was caught by the classical word.

I thought that Paul Belasik summed up the difference betwen the two very well.

In competition dressage you are aiming to get the movement closest to the ideal that the judges want.

In classical dressage you are aiming to get the movement as good as possible for that particular horse.

Therefore competition dressage sometimes forces horses to perform movements in what is seen as the ideal, but what may be not the best that horse can do.

Read Belasik, he explains things much better than I!
