driving

On the weekend I went to a BDS meeting and I am really interested in teching my horse to drive! I have driven before but i am not very good at it! Does anyone out there drive??? I have organised that i will learn 2 drive proplerly in the summer holidays and i am really looking forward to it! Does any body have any hints or tips????

I do. I learned after my loan horse shied and I fell off hyrting myslef. I could not sit down for weeks. As I could not ride I asked if I could learn to drive him and his owner said yes. She taught me. Must admit I prefer to drive than ride. Unfortunately Rhi cart is broke and she now has no harness so I have to start saving up again.

Driving is a wonderful thing to pursue with your horse

It is very good for building strength and softening the mouth. I have only driven 1 of my horses in a show, but I drive all 3 of them occassionally to vary their work routines. I can't think of many tips on how to start your horses driving ... perhaps try lining them from the ground first to get them used to that type of control, and work slowly.

Driving is where you harness your horse to a cart, buggy, or carraige and they pull it while you sit in the vehicle and guide them with lon reins. I'm sure you've seen it in movies, TV, etc.

I learned to drieve because I did my back a bad injury, which I have now recovered from. Never did think I would but I did.

I drive pairs and singles. I did get a Stallion team together, but never did get to drive them competatively.

The pairs I drove were Father and Son, two stallions. You can see them at www.geocities.com/tonkii2000/horses

All I can say is train your horse slowly. Driving has far more dangers than riding. Join the British Driving Society, read plenty, and don;t take risks.

BDS books are with reading, Sally Waldron writes well.

Agree with Wally. Join BDS. Also get Carriage Driving magazine (put this in Google and will give you some useful websites). Sallie Walrond's books are good and there are some simpler ones too. E-mail me off the board if you want more info. reynolmc@waitrose.com
