Horrible night last night

Well guys last night is NOT something I ever want to repeat in a long time
Had a parents evening and didnt get to her field until 5.30 by this time it was like Iraq, couldnt see the field for smoke, the horse was galloping round terrified, eventually caught her and tried to lead her into a shelter to lock her in with me there of course, got her within 2 feet a banger went off she reared broke her field safe headcollar and galloped across a VERY WET kicked up hill and back down slipping everywhere, I was terrified she fell, couldnt get near her after that, spent 4 hours sat in a field feeling totally helpless as I just couldnt get anywhere near her to reassure her, and watched whilst she galloped up and down, paced the fence and was totally out of it
Came home eventually cos there was nothing I could do and never slept a wink all nite, went down at 6 this morning and my god what a state my horse was in, she had literally galloped round all night, the field unfortunately is not the best in regards of being flat and not rutted up
Today shes very traumatised and could not risk another night again, a good friend had found her temp stables a few miles away just to get her out of the situation as the fireworks will last well until next week, a guy came with a trailer she was having NONE of it she normally loads brilliant, the slightest noise and shes jumping around a totally different horse today, anyways we walked her there no mean feat jumping at every noise, even cars poor girl
Anyways have decided that this field lark is no good for Abbie she needs routine, turnout thru the day and a cosy stable at nite so am going to look at what sounds a really good livery yard tomoz, who adhere to the Monty Roberts ways YEYYYYYYYYY with a view to moving her on sunday as her temp accomodation is only till monday at the latest no way will I put her thru that again and tbh I very much doubt I will eva get her near that field shelter ever again, I will also add that I went down with a feed this morning she didnt even look at it, anyways once she was stabled in a beautiful yard, and rugged up with a feed and two haynets she was ok, VERY muddy but decided to leave her, let it dry and give her a good groom tomoz

Tracy

It must have been awful to see your horse panicking so much over the fire works and no wonder you had a sleepless night.Hope the new yard works out well for you , good luck

My horses have never really bothered about fireworks and my yard is near a farm, but well away from the villages thank God!! they have had fireworks tonight but not many, my OH went to see if they were alright and luckily they were the foals did jump about a bit in the stables but it only lasted about 20 mins in total.

Tbh I had an inkling she would panic BUT never realised just how much, it was unreal never have I felt so hopeless in my life it was just like waiting to see when she fell am sure shes gone down today though, shes not lame at least not yet I hope shes ok and at least will get a couple of days chill out time and sleep before we move her to the new yard, I am sure she will settle very well as I belive thats what shes been used to, horses around her and the routine shes not cut out for living like this shes a very insecure mare at the best of times and needs the reassurance of other horses around, hopefully she will get over this in time and enjoy her time at the yard with the others
But yeah not an good nite, very emotional have had a thumping headache all day and worrying about tonight and what was going to happen am just pleased shes out of it now, safe, warm and with a full belly and a beautiful welshie stallion across the yard in another stable lol
I WILL SLEEP WELL TONITE but feel awful about what happened to my girl last night and what she had to go thru and I WAS POWERLESS to help her

I had something similar happen to me years ago, when introducing rugs to a two year old filly, she had worn a stable rug happilly and even a turnout overnight in the stable and being led about. After a couple of days i let her out into an 18 acre field with the other horses she just went beserk running from one side to the other eventually going through the fencing it was my first time seeing a horse panic too, i remember it well and how helpless i felt too.Box rest a cold hosing and bandaging for a month as result

The new yard and routine might suit her if thats what she is used too in the past and you will maybe relax more knowing there are people on hand to help too.

Thats it routine and safety
Even when I know shes happier in at nites and when I locked her in the shelter for some reason she didnt like it, she prefers a yard and horses to be stabled on I was still up at 6 to check she was ok her field is far to close to people if that makes sense and no security I tried to do my best for her but still felt awful at shutting her in, JUST IN CASE cos u neva know what folk are capable of, its actually worth paying for livery for peace of mind at least I can lay in bed for an extra hour or so now and know my mare is safe and that has to count for something
But yes a panicking horse whos terrified and you cant do anything is the most horrible feeling in the world, am just really hoping she is calm enough to load on sunday because I really dont want to force the issue but this time unfortunately it has to be done both for her and me
Do you guys think that after a couple of days chill out time she may be ok

I am sure she will be ok, but take your time loading her don't get stressed or feel under pressure they pick up on that.

Thanks mate
We tried tonite to load her BUT shes far to hyped up never seen her like that must hve been so traumatic for her, its like shes lost the plot, was lucky tbh that I managed to get near her to put a headcollar on in the first place think she had decided I really dont wanna be here but didnt trust enuff to load, she walked ok apart from the slight hic cups but that was inevitable if I still feel stressed out I will get the guys from the yard to do it they dont have the emotional tie with Abbie that I do and if my adrenalin goes up thinking what if then hers will to, but load she does have to cos theres no way than I can ride her that distance the yard is about 10 miles from me on busy roads but this move will sort her out, because to be honest she was on livery a few weeks back, the routine sorted her then it started raining and they were locked in for 4 days which I didnt agree with then I spat the dummy out and pulled her out only to learn that in reality Abbie actually needs this life, which boils down to routine and companionship of other horses, we have had many issues since moving her to MY field, biting, trying to be dominant and am sure its because she needs other horses around

I was only on a livery yard a month then got my own place i prefer it that way, livery yards have to many rules for me and too many experts but i did make sure my new mare had company from day one at my place and we do have stables and shelters to use when needed but i prefer them to have as natural a life as possible but some horses prefer the routines of livery yards and the comfort who could blame them.Maybe your issues with her will go once shes settled in her new place, fingers crossed hey!!
And if its a NH type yard there should be plenty of help and support for you and her there. Good luck

Gosh sounds awful, I am so lucky in that my two don't seem to take that much notice, especially if they have loads of hay to keep them occupied.

Some Horses settle quite happily alone and some need a companion, simple as really, bit like people, some are quite happy being on their
lonesomes and others hate being alone.

I sincerely hope she settles down again soon and the new livery yard works out for you both

Bonfire night, week, month, cos they seem to go off all year round now, is
the total pits for Horse Owners.

Lets pray she loads to go to her new yard, although one wya or another you will get her there. Must have been terrible for you seeing her panic like that. Whats so annoying is that you will probably have your work cut out now getting her to relax around loud noises and bangs. Fireworks have a lot to answer for. I am very lucky as Adella has never really bothered about fireworks and we are quite away from other houses. I sincerely hope she settles down and is much more comfortable with the company of other horses around her, bless her xx

If you happen to have some arnica tablets, put a couple in her feeds for the next few days. By the sounds of all that racing around and trauma she's had, she'll be extremely wound up and sore. I hope this helps

The sooner these bloody things are banned completely the better.

If that makes me a killjoy, then that's what I am, and proud of it. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone over 18 can buy explosives in the local newsagents.

Fortunately my horse couldn't care less, though obviously she spooks a bit at very loud bangs, but at home I've got a cat, a dog, a rabbit and a duck. All were terrified, leaping around with every bang and flash.

The idiots round our way have been letting the damn things off for about two weeks now, and last night they decided that another barrage at 11pm would be a good idea. I think they were industrial strength ones as well, judging by the noise.

An update

Shes more or less chilled now, walked her miles to her temproaray stables last night, put a stable rug on, had a feed and left hay tied up. went this morning had been laying down asleep rug was covered in shavings, left her in all day today and shes calm and eating well, gave her a good groom and looked at new livery yard today shes moving tomoz, she does appear slighlty lame in hind leg knowing how she galloped round that field its not surprising theres no heat though will keep my eye on it, am praying she loads ok as this move will do her the world of good, routine, stability companionship and NO BLOODY FIREWORKS, seriously though I need to de sensitize from loud bangs what if I am riding and a car backfires??? need to get this sorted
MY MARES SAFETY WAS IMPORTANT TO ME I took the chance and walked her almost 5 miles to a safe stable, she was spooky, scared and who can blame her I agree BAN THEM

oh heck! you poor things what a horrible experience, i agree fireworks should be banned (if i, as a PhD qualified chemistry teacher can't handle such chemicals used to make them at my work, why the heck should any odd and sod on the street have them?!). Glad she is more settled. Definately keep that reiki appointment, i think it would do her good

I am glad to hear that the moves and loading went well and your mare has settled well on the new livery yard Good luck to you both on your new yard.
