2018 Hacking/Riding challenge........ Add your photos and join in open to anyone.

I still can't ride (although I now should be able to mid Feb) so I have been concentrating on a bit of groundwork when conditions allow. My attempts at lunging have been a bit laughable so I booked a lesson with an instructor that I have not used before, but have seen instructing.

It went very well. She lunged Harvey while telling me what she was doing. He basically worked the same for her as he did for me, but she knew how to correct any issues which I didn't. I then took over and with my newfound knowledge he went very well for me too. I wanted to consolidate on Sunday, but the school was frozen so that will have to wait until another today.

Once you get lunging down get the instructor to help you do
traveling circles they are lots of fun!!

Its nice and sunny today but no wind woo hoo.

I had thougth to saddle him play and maybe ride a bit but
not tring to ride was the right choice.
The snow has gotten packed and the slight melt has made things slick and its going to be worse before its better :(:(.

I came over to the round pen and the drifts are deep but he had
a great time blowing it out!:);):D

He did a lot of lovely non bratty galloping and looked so pretty going thru the deep snow prancing.
He was also great at transitions and reversing on command.
I ended up sort of getting a little stuck in a snow drift in there
but he shined with voice commands cause I was not in a postion to reinforce if need be by moving towards him.

Then I did some walk on the road.

WE could get 3 inches rain fri into sat thank god its rain
that would be 39 inches if it was snow:eek::eek::eek:
But it wont be all peaches and cream it will make the snow that does not melt a really big sloppy mess and if it does get colder again right after its going to be a frozen cement like mess.
I hope being warm tomorrow and two days with ran warm most melts!!
People prone to stream and street flooding could be in for a nasty flooding mess though.

I'm just taking it one day at a time!
Riding will come but when its safe!;)

image.jpeg Yaye Mr T had his first 2018 ride:D
And what a ride:p
Zi was amazing as always, but poor lamb had a wonky front hoof boot and on the way home it sunded funny to me (I was walking on foot in front). It was well and truly twisted:eek: bless him, he stoically marched on! OH got off asap and we carefully removed said boot and continued home all on foot. What a good boy Zi is. No way would madam have tolerated anything like that! And I have to say all the cars we met were wonderful and slowed right down:D one chap very kindly slowed down when we were struggling on the ice (oh yes, there was lots of that which hadn't melted:oops:) and I was like a wobbly penguin at one point because I was wearing MH boots instead of my normal grippy ones. So all in all quite eventful for us:pZi got extra polos for being so steady and I whispered my thank yous for taking such good care of Mr T. Only three quarters of an hour and not a great pic but have added it anyway.

Woo hoo did not think id be able to play today
The packed snow was so slick this am:(.

It was kind of warm but sadly no sun BUT things did start to melt and by late afternoon the driveway was melting
and draining ;)

Got my husband this am to help me with some things in the way in the grooming room cause I really want to start to utilize it.
I could not safely play and I was wating for my saddle rack /saddle pad combo and another all saddle pad rack to come today.

I got part of it:( the 2 top swing arm pad rack add on's but neither of the 2 bases so oh well maybe tomorrow.

There were snow drifts to my waist at the groom room
but I got that sorted to get in there and we shifted the
big hay rack thing and the gate that were in the way
and he put up my open back sort of shelf things for spray bottles etc and I started to place the items for my vaccum ;):)
And added some chain across the opening of a back paddock
that had most of the snow blow out of it and by late afternoon a lot more had melted

I played in the front yard and did traveling circles in the road
then let him in that back paddock and woo hoo never noticed a big rock to play on.

I did not try to get into the groom room It can be gotten into but
there is still a lot of snow drift ..

snow drifts:(:mad:IMG_5561.JPG
.digging out after getting inside

IMG_5708.JPG

For no sun we did good melting TODAY
It will stay above freezing tonite and warmer with heavy rain tomorrow so hopefully it washes a lot of this snow AWAY:p:p
WE HAVE 2 more warm days before it gets cold again but not bone chilling cold just high 20'sf to 30f..

I'm just so glad I got to play again today!!!;):D:)

A 2.42 mile hack today, colddddd! Just stayed around the front area as every where is pretty much drowned! First time in almost two years since cob has been out with another horse and he was a good lad and then willow his bezzie first time out at all in over a year and half and was also a good boy. Kept it to a walk as ground was so wet

Just a 2.5 mile hack around the farm estate today. I would have loved to go further, but it's our Anniversary and my OH would have killed me if I'd gone out with Pete all day ... :D

Been a topsy turvy couple of days Friday was heavy rain all day
and horrible winds

Spent the day doing some more arranging of my groom room
the base pieces did arrive for my racks with add on pad holder
woo hoo I was thrilled. til............:(

Put the saddle rack one together went to put the add on pad rack on and the top saddle rack post is CLOSED :mad::mad::mad:
The pad rack is tapered bottom of post and supposed to slide into it to I called the place I ordered from they knew the problem and would send a post that works but then I realized I had a second all pad rack in the groom are so had to while they were on phone run out in the pouring rain to open it
and that one was fine the top had a plastic cap and did open
but on a good note they did get replacement piece out to me Friday rush and it should be here Tuesday!!:);)

so at the moment this is what I have 1 not 2 sadde racks then the pad rack

The snow was melting quickly with the warmer temps and heavy rain lots of flooding was expected but we had a little bit of puddled water here and there nothing bad.

Yesterday am I did a walkabout omg it was 60f almost all the snow was GONE ;) and no puddles but the frost was only out of the ground a couple inches and really really soft.
A flash freeze was expected but thankfully the sun came out but in 3 hrs temps went from 60 to low 20's
but yea the ground firmed up AND I played!!

I played in different areas towards the barns and went down the laneway to make sure my fence and signs were still there
they were;)
I played a bit in the road - I have good sight lines.
then went into the groom room to vac Sonny

Its still a bit un organized:confused: and open box checking the rack
is there cause its not assembled yet
I forgot to sort out ties:( and had to improvise but it was still great to be in there!:);):D
Then I let him hang out a bit in that back paddock..
Today is only16f going to very low 20 but will be sunny and not horrible winds so ill do more play today:);):D
I had plenty of mud for the vac:rolleyes:

Loving all the pictures and reports. Ive been realy full of cold the last week, so rode for 45 mins on monday after work and he had the rest of the week off, which is very unlike me.

Schooled on saturday (due to the 4 days off!) and he was very good, working on gettting really active canter transtions and the eternal balance of straigtness and flexibility!

Lovely hack today, no wind and feeling a bit better.

Total:
Time in saddle not hacking: 4hrs 15 mins.
Hacking : 12 miles, 3 hrs 10 mins

Pretty pic of him being quite upset about not doing anything one night in the week!

Managed to get in 30 mins on sunday and another 30 mins this morning :D. We have a weather warning in place from 6pm tonight for snow , so I don't know if I will get anymore riding in for a few days:(

Total ridden 1 hr 30 mins :)

Did a 30 minute schooling session then 10 minutes walking round the track at the yard. Schooling went really well, first time I've schooled for a few months. It's not his favourite thing bless him but he was fantastic, including a decent canter on the right rein which is his worse rein.

Totals 6.85km in 1hr40 plus 30 minutes schooling.

We did get really hard freeze without thank god so much of the "FLASH"
Most all bits of puddles did mange to sink in.;):):D

The ground was very very hard I went to check Virginia's ring and that had drained mostly as well past a little in one corner.
I played a little with walk only then came over here.
The ground was a bit too hard everyplace to do more than walk except the cavaletti pen that I added the
wood chip around the edge that was much more cushony;).
Sooooooooo glad I did that last fall;).
I had multiple play sessions in there in between bringing in fire wood.
I did lots and lots of trot and trot transitions he was picture perfect on voice commands:).
I was working on really quick intervals of transition.
He was very focused and relaxed no silly boy at all.;);)
IMG_5968.JPG
He also enjoyed some time in that back paddock.

Not sure what today will bring its snowing and its not supposed to be :(.

Late Tues to Wed we have 2-4 inches due then another mini warm up:D and possibly 50 by the weekend:):););):D:D.
As much as I totally HATE snow a couple inches then a warm up would not be bad it would make it nice to use the big rd pen for him to blow it out which I don't encourage on hard ground.

If we changed to a pattern like that winter would not be
so hard to take!!

I'm still on groundwork only. On Saturday I helped E clip her two clipper shy ponies. We escaped with our lives and only one broken lead rope.

I lunged Harvey in the afternoon and he went quite nicely for me. I still can only get him to trot, but now I can reliably get him to trot in a circle around me without him coming in to me every ten seconds. We also had another trot-up practice which went well.

I will be having to supply Harvey's hard feed from the start of February so on Sunday I went and bought him some food and a feed scoop! I intend to change his feed a bit so it is less cereal and sugar, but until he is settled in his new yard I will leave well alone.
