OMG finally...

Fantastic. Well done! We are doing the 80 pairs at Eland in 2 weeks. But that's a qualifier. Is it the Championships at the end of the season you have qualified for?

I'd already watched the videos (which were great), but that fence looks *much* bigger on the photo (gulp!)

He makes 3’ seem easy. Honestly, I find it more difficult to get him to jump 1’6” correctly because he won’t pick his feet up. “But this is a trotting pole, Mum”

Wow, amazing! Congratulations :D:D Love the video, but I must say it did make the fences look a lot smaller than they actually are! I'm terrified just standing next to an 80 cm XC fence! Can I ask why you kept slowing down on the course? Is it because of time penalties? Sorry if that's a silly question, I know nothing about hunter trials and always imagined it would be a flat out gallop between fences.

It normally is. But I discovered that the course is effectively 750+ metres short.

Optimum time was 4:24:00
Optimum speed given was 425 metres per minute.

I measured the course with a course walk app, and sent it off for public upload so anyone can download it. (CrossCountryApp - lite. It’s the free version where you can download, but not create courses. Look for Hall Place Equestrian Centre, )

The app owners actually emailed me back- here’s a copy & paste: “Thanks for recording the course and sending it for publication. Can you confirm if it should be listed as a Novice 80 cm as this seems a little at odds though happy to go with your confirmation. Can you also confirm if the optimum time of 4min 24sec is correct with an official length of 1870 please? I ask because the course as measured stands at 1115m which gives an optimum time about half of the official one.”

So that’s why we kept slowing down.

And I think we chuffing NAILED IT because we were 11 seconds outside optimum time. If I hadn’t had to circle him to stop him getting his head kicked in over the roll top, we would have been bang on it I reckon.

It also explains why I have a massive problem with the XC there because he is always, ALWAYS too fast. It’s not that he’s too fast, it’s that the course is too short. :D And therefore that the time is too long. I took a photo of the results sheet- there were 2 clear rounds, us and the pair who finished 2nd. The closest time to ours was over a minute inside optimum. One was over a minute and a half inside it!

So, the problem is going to be, getting my partner up to speed. I think we need to do a lot of XC schooling this summer. ;)

If anyone wants 3’0 XC fences to feel small, have a go on my boy. He makes them feel teeny tiny.

:D

He turned 17 yesterday. Love him to bits.
