Any Arab Lovers?

I have an Arab and I love him to death. I have a problem though, he is 23 years old and is underweight. I fear he will only get worse as winter sets in... I need some advice in helping an old horse gain weight back on. (hopefully quickly!) currently I am feeding him several pitches of alfalfa and 5 cups of molasses covered oats per day. If Anyone has any advice for me, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! share with me.
Is he getting grass hay in addition to the Alfa? If you can get some beet pulp that's a good option for fattening them up without Making them excitable, and/or adding some oil to the diet is also really good, canola or corn work :)

So should I mix(canola oil) this oil in with his molasses oats? and if so how much would be healthiest?

You need to introduce oil slowly, it can take about 8 weeks for the gut to really utilize it properly and for you to see results, I'd start with a little glug and build up to about a cup full if you need to :)

Perhaps try a balancer? Horse and Pony Direct do one that we use on our horses and its pretty reasonably priced! Alternatively barley is also a good option for weight gain! Hope you find a solution :)

Hi, I'm new, but I have an 8yr old Arab mare - okay, she's 3/4 Arab, but still.
I've had her since she was turning 4, and have backed her and brought her on myself.
I adore her, but Christ, she can be a nightmare :) xx

Hi @Maysmoor25 :)

In what way can your mare be a nightmare? My gelding is 11 this year and I can honestly say he's really well behaved (most of the time!) The only issue I have is that he's a delicate little flower and needs wrapping in cotton wool sometimes lol.

How do I add photos?
She is a diva, a pansy and the bravest mare I've met. She is a people person, but has attachment issues with my other two mares. She's a natural at dressage, and a wonderful scopey jump, but has had problems with her back and she's a pain to find a saddle which fits.
She's everything to me, and I adore her.
I know plenty of people who are terrified of her - they'd call her a delinquent. She isn't, she just has 'dramatic flair'
So, no, she isn't a nightmare - she's just Freya :D

{who will be #issed with me on Saturday, as the saddle fitter is coming out, and we're fairly certain we've found one to fit}
