2017 Hacking/ Riding Challenge.... Add your photos too

Usual hacking out on Sunday. Pretty uneventful apart from a few cheeky attempts to eat grass! Only planned a short one but ended up staying out for longer than expected. Love being able to hack out alone, a lot of the horses on the yard won't do it so I really appreciate having a very chilled out share!

Total today 7.6km in 1hr30mins.

Overall totals 163.55km in 27hrs 40mins plus 7 hours 5mins schooling

Ale I would really like to try interdressage, I've downloaded one of the easiest tests but have only practised it a couple of times. All the best for your test as and when the time comes!

You should give it a go, they are really lovely judges and always give lots of positive feedback as well as things to work on :) thank-you!

Lots to add this week :D

Sunday was 3 hours at the show, including hacking over and back. Was brilliant!

Then on Tues I rode for about 40 mins, just schooling but he was very good!

Then today a very soggy but successful hack with my boyfriend on foot. 2 hours 15, I walked the last bit as had to get off for some cows and we were soaked through by then!!

It was a lovely evening, I pootled alongside on foot. Zi was lovely and OH had a bit of a trot on him. Boy does this horse cover ground fast!lol my stumpy legs couldn't keep up!!!:D

Both Maureen and Toni came over. The weather was a bit humid but not horrid.
Toni Played on the ground and left sooner as her allergies were really kicking up.
Maureen Started on the ground then mounted after a little while.

We played in the ring then up under the trees of the grassy hill-- woo hoo it was not buggy.

Virginia even came to the top of her driveway and let Tobias watch.
She is not ready to come play yet.....

Then played with the ball Penny Maureens appy has not played with a ball before. She did great.

After Toni went back with Levi Marueen and I Went to the cavaletti on the other side of the house.
And we started to introduce Penny to the goats.
Maureen is not sure yet what she will get for a companion for Penny when they move.

After riding Maureen came over and I showed her the tack shed and grooming room I set up and came to meet the goats.
She got a kick out of little Jefferson jumping in my husbands lap and
going to sleep.
Penny was cute she came up a bit then when Chester jumped up on the fence to say HI she backed up
and hid behind Sonny.

Then we Did a bunch more rideabout all around the property and played with the smaller pedistool I had flilled.
That is the smallest of the 3 I will make..

I was a great day and lots of fun. Can't wait til NEXT SUNDAY!!

On Saturday I planned to take Harvey in the jumping paddock, so I went and put all the fences up at 70cm. Then when I brought Harvey out of his stable I heard an ominous clip, clop, clip thud. Sure enough he had lost another shoe (that's 3 in the last 2 sets), so jumping was off the agenda. I went and rode in the school where I found found he was ok in walk, but just not quite right in trot so I just played over a square of poles on the floor for 20 minutes to make him think about where he was putting his feet. I did this without stirrups as I thought it would be good for me!

I have been doing a lot of stables while folks are away and Saturday was my last day of this. I was offered some help, but I turned it down as I wanted to have done it all myself (male pride). I then went to do my own stable to find that somebody had done it for me - everyone there had been sitting waiting to see my face when I found out!

On Sunday the farrier came in the morning so I was mobile again, and I had somebody to ride with. We went down to the ford where Harvey again went in first and was quite relaxed. I then took O and E to a bridleway they hadn't been to before and we were forced to have a group canter :)

This is the card that O made me as a thank you for doing stables - that's Harvey :) I love my stable family!

Nice ride with Virginia yesterday.
The humidity was a bit nasty and it felt a bit airless out since it was dead calm.
We rode down to Trails another woman- Irene has on her property.
They are nice and pine needle and Virginia said she had put wood chips along them years ago when she made them so they are not rocky or gravely at all.
She has a real bridge over one mucky spot which is a lovely obstacle!!!

We did not ride them as much as planned Tobias- Virginias horse was a bit
wired and when he heard a tractor start thru the woods he got a bit more
unsettled so we headed back.
There is not need to push thru being uncomfortable next time we can go further.

My knee started to cramp up a bit so I found the trick to get off and give it a walk out then remount ..

Virginia likes to trot up a hill on the way back very close to getting home.
That's one way we are a bit like oil and vinegar.
I won't do that but we have it worked out ok.
Tobias is fine going on trotting to home alone without us.
And Sonny is fine continuing to walk on home.

Instead of going back to her barn -which I think worked out really good
was to go back to my house untack Sonny and let him eat some grass over here
etc then walk him back after and just take the tack back in the car!.

I really do like how putting wood chips on the trails ended up composting down to
REALLY REALLY LOVELY FOOTING!!!.

My laneway (fiber optic easement) on the side is very gravely
I may see if I can get woodchips and put just a narrow pathway of woodchips
down that ...

One bad thing is there is soooooooooo much ugh Pepperbush blooming now.
It really is a shame that it plays such heck with my sinus.
Its rather pretty and has a nice sweet smell but its all around the trails ugh.
I'm sooooooooo glad there really is not any here!!!

All the bushes with white flowers is pepperbush.IMG_6953.JPG

It was just Toni and I today.
She played with Levi a bit in the ring and on mounting then we did a lot of
play up in the woods of the grassy field in the shade and did a lot of tree circling play.
It was awesome not buggy!!
We did a little cavaletti play.

I rode on Tuesday in the school, to be honest neither of us could really be bothered and so kept it short and simple!

Friday I was also meant to ride but didn't finish work until 7pm and was very tired, then it started raining and I decided I wouldn't bother.

Oh dear what a lacklustre week!

But today we both enjoyed ourselves, lovely long hack out with a lovely lady and her new forest pony. Ground is nice and soft but not too boggy so plenty of opportunities for nice long trots, we had 4 canters(2 very short!) I think and then one gallop :D

Both horses really enjoyed themselves and we're not tired when we returned. We had walked a fair distance also and they are both quite fit now :)

I've joined a group called the Worcestershire Bridleways and Rider's Association which basically lets me park the horsebox in a number of places to go hacking. On Saturday E, O (who are also members) and I boxed over to a livery yard about 15 miles away and had a really nice hack. We covered 8.4 miles a lot of which was on bridleways and even got offered a coffee when we got back. Harvey was very good and even lead the others though a narrow ford.

On Sunday I was pleased to find that the jumps in the paddock were still where I had left them from last week so we went for a play. I had set them all at 70cm. Harvey went well - I am starting to be able to collect his canter a bit so he jumps better and I have a bit more control on the corners. We finished by putting the rustic fence up to 80cm which he jumped nicely for me (80cm is the highest I have jumped him, but this wasn't his first 80cm)

Out hacking :)

Jumping fun - 70cm looks so tiny in the photos :(

Haven't written for a couple of weeks as last weekend I just went in the school for a bit rather than hacking out. I also had a lesson on Monday last week so that was another hour in the school.

Yesterday we hacked out alone, it was really busy, one of the busiest days I think I've ever hacked. My share took everything in his stride, wasn't phased by a tractor, dogs, people, bikes, nothing! It was like it wasn't even there! Sometimes I think he must be half asleep lol.

I also worked hard to keep him going at a really forward pace, really marching on. One of the things my instructor said to me on Monday was that I need to make sure he knows I'm boss as I have a tendency to be a bit soft, and he could end up taking advantage of that. So I pushed him on and he was great, loads of walk-halt and walk-trot transitions and he did as asked 99% of the time first time. Managed to get a few strides of canter in but then some dogs came round the corner up ahead so went straight back to walk just in case. Hoping to do a specific route with a decent spot for cantering this weekend!

Total from yesterday - 6.51km in 1hr15mins.

Overall totals 170.06km in 28hrs 55mins plus 8 hours 30mins schooling

On Tuesday I just schooled for about half an hour, had to work late and so was getting knackered by the time I rode.

Today I went for a hack after work :D was absolutely fab, went with a lovely lady and her pony who I used to ride. We ended up going for a long one and having a really nice long canter but we walked most of the rest of the way!

A lovely day weather wise here on thursday so Mr T had a lovely ride about on Zi. They look so chilled together, sometimes I truly believe things are meant to be. They have found each other:D they had about half an hour and this time I sort of spied on them but didn't feel it necessary to follow them all the way round (I think that's me not OH who thinks they need moral support lol ). There's something incredibly enjoyable too about being able to groom for him after all these years of him not having a ride of his own, I feel like I can give him something back on that score as he used to spend most days at some point following Stormy and me, or helping me get her ready:)
