Foraging

I managed to get out yesterday afternoon in between the showers, I have half a bucket of rose hips drying in the dehumidifier :D I'm hoping it will be reasonably dry today so I can go and collect a glut of nettles to stick in the airing cupboard. I'm thinking next year I should probably go out in the spring for young shoots of things to dry for the following winter, shoots are a bit past their best now.

We have no airing cupboard so how could I dry. Seems silly buying it when I can pick it and watch her spit it out.

In the oven on a really low heat, whatever your ovens lowest setting is, and leave the door cracked open :) I brought my dehumidifier from amazon 2 or 3 years ago for under 20 quid, its saved me that already though it is a bit bulky to store. Any warm well ventilated heat source should work, even on a radiator in a tub to capture the heat (but not moisture) should work :)

I tried collecting and drying nettles one year. The horses were less than impressed lol. I may try rose hips to see if they like those any better.

Mine likes dried nettles. I fed those while on box rest. I feed any herb that poked it's head up from memory. She only had muck out time to nibble grass.

I've got windfall apples in the dehumidifier tonight, if they dry well theres tons of them, the neds aren't allowed lots of apples but if I can preserve them they can have little morsels all winter :D
