Wormers for Encysted Small Redworm

Afternoon all,

Question for the more experienced out there - I worm test seasonally, but have given Pramox in the past for tapeworm and encysted small redworm. I recently decided to try a tapeworm saliva test which thankfully has come back low, as has the standard poo worm test kit - all good there.
I realise I have to give her something for encysted, as far as I'm aware there isn't a test available for this yet? So looking on-line, encysted needs to have a wormer with Moxidectin in it - however, the ones I can find say that they also treat tapeworm so what is the point of having a saliva test for tapeworm if you end up having to treat with the same chemical anyway? Does anyone know of a product that purely targets encysted? Maybe I have fallen foul of marketing ploys but I want to give my horse as little chemicals as possible but obviously without endangering her x

Your choices are moxidectin (regular equest not pramox which has the tape part added) or benzimidazole (panacur 5 day guard), from memory those are the only 2 which kill encysted redworm.

That's what I love about this forum - someone always know the answer and replies quickly - thank you! x

There is also a blood test for encysted I believe.
I probably wouldn't trust the saliva test to be fair.

I thought it was the other way round - its the Equest Pramox that does redworm?

Just checked and I see I am wrong, so I too have learned something!

Is there a blood test for encysted? I've never heard of it but I'd love it if there was, the less wormers I have to use the better.

My vets aren't convinced about the saliva test for tapeworm either so you aren't alone, and I chose to have Little Un blood tested rather than use it.

When the cob was sick she had a blood test but maybe that was to determine something else.

It's possible that because they knew we had a big problem, they used her as part of a study. I remember saying yes anyway.
