Concerned that he may over heat?

We are forecast to hit 27 degrees tomorrow and ale still has alot of winter coat as he only started shedding this week really so I'm worried he will over heat. Anyone else thinking the same? There isn't a breeze today either.

Anything I can do??

Can you visit him and offer up a cool bath? One summer when it was hot back at old house we sponged our girls with cold water throughout the day.

Just thinking also, will he need fly rug or fly spray? I know it's early in the season but those nasty horse flies seem to hatch out once the temps come up. We thankfully don't have that problem here! It never gets that hot. I am sure he'll be fine though, so long as he has his water etc, he might drink more? Maybe give an extra bucket?

Has he got any kind of shade at all? Even just a tree to stand under? I honestly wouldn’t worry too much, just make sure he’s got plenty of water.

Plenty of water and a cool wipe over if he is sweaty. Don't worry too much, Ziggy would normally be mega hairy still at this time of year, and in the first warm snap he just sweats a lot!

My little boys were sweating stood still yesterday and have several days when its just been higher teens, even though they are shedding like mad they still resemble yaks. They are drinking quite a lot and don't have shade as all the trees are around the edge where Jess is. I will see how they are tonight, if they are notably uncomfortable I may move them back across to their shelter for tomorrow or pop a gazeebo up for them :) I'm lucky I work earlier so can check on them as the heat peaks mid afternoon.

@Kite_Rider I was thinking the same about shade - as long as he's got that & plenty of water then I wouldn't worry. Maybe try to get as much hair out tonight as you can, but that's all I'd do.

Sadly I'll only be seeing him about 6am and 6pm so it won't be much help dousing him then .

I've never ever put a fly sheet on him, touch wood he doesn't seem to get overly bothered by the flies. I cleaned out his automatic trough the other day which I'm incredibly grateful to have as last year had to haul containers over daily!

No shade in this field, I'm planning on getting him a gazebo for summer wasn't expecting temps so warm so quickly!

Thanks for all the advice everyone, just been to see him and no signs he had even been sweating. His coat looks alot more like a summer coat today, he must of rolled a fair bit out. I went over him with the shedding blade again. There was a nice breeze out in the field so hopefully we all have the same again tomorrow and I can get that gazebo sorted for summer

I'm sure he will be fine, Belle was ok tonight and she's still quite fluffy, it's been 25 degrees here today too. She is in a paddock with no shade too.

If they get too hot I just chuck buckets of water over them from the water trough. I put mine in fly sheets and masks this morning.
In the real heat I will quite often dunk a fly sheet in a bucket of water, hose the horses, then put wet sheets on.

It was 26c here yesterday @Ale, the little boys were hot and mildly sweaty but weren't in the least bit bothered :) I actually realized the trees Jess normally shades under aren't even much use at the moment as they haven't got all their leaves yet. Like you said, we had a good breeze too so it wasn't stifling :)

You could clip a strip to let air circulate? I am doing this because she has a thick summer coat let alone winter one.

I did some research on Fly Sheets with high UV blockage that's supposed to lead the rays away from the horse and keep them cooler as well as protected from bugs while T/O. I ended up getting a Shires Sweet Itch one after reading this guide and my horse are cool underneath so works well.

all but 2 of ours have thick winter coats still even though shedding has started, Tess was dripping with it when I got u there last night (27degrees) so I got the shedder and stripped as much off her as I could, she was fine this morning but its only to get to 20 today , the others all stood it okay.
don't want to clip any as we are subject to get plenty of cold wind/ rain yet and would prefer them to manage themselves if at all possible just with the help of the shedding blade for 15 minutes a day.

28 here yesterday and Belle wasn’t even sweaty, she’s not one to run about though and turns into a sleepy pony when it’s warm. She had however drunk loads more water than normal.
Hope Ale was fine when you got there last night Ale.

It's forecast to come in cooler, I need to it to be able to strip. Damp and sweaty otherwise just grazing.
Working must be uncomfortable for her carrying all that coat and sweating.

It was 32c here when I got in my car at 3pm, crazy given it was like -15 at one point last month. Mine were all warm but ok, the boys were still off nibbling, Jess was a little bothered but I'd put her shires sweet itch rug on and she was sweating under it, much happier when I took it off and put fly cream on instead :) I left the yard about 7pm and my thermometer still ready 27c then.
