Hi Jessey I started a worm box this morning using worms I'm finding out in the
soil.
I did a series of photos for you ITS REALLY EASY.
(this is the first time I'm using what I will call local worms not any of the 3 types I bought.
I planted some daylily today in virgin places and these worms were not in
any compost etc they were directly in the soil.
I drilled 2 boxes at once random holes on the top and sides nothing fancy
Then as I was digging holes I put the top bit of soil with the grass in the box
as I'm digging I'm putting some of the worms I find In the box
I added a bit more soil as put some more worms in but I did not make it really really full and heavy since I need to bring it to the basement
and I don't have a huge amount of worms in it yet.
As I do more planting and bring more worms down to put in I ll have another container of soil with those worms
I put a bit of hay on top
I was going to add a fork full of partial composted goats bedding
but when I just barely took the top woo hoo lots and lots of worms
but they may be the ones I put out last fall that are compost worms
so I did not put that in
I gently looked around a bit and found some that seemed wormless
and just put a little on one side on top of the hay
then I took it to the basement
I pulled aside the hay and added a little water to dampen it a bit more.
I don't want it soggy but I don't want it to dry out -- that I will have to keep checking
then I gave a sprinkle of potato flakes on one side
and covered it back over/
Later ill cut up some potatoes small thin slices and put in there and gone past lettuce
and vegetable scraps just like the other bins.
I so far had mostly big worms and just a few smaller ones so if I go thru
in time and see babies I will know they are reproducing.
When these reproduce enough to take some out since I got them directly out of soil I will put them back in soil.
When I start a from scratch box for the others ill show you that one too
using peat moss etc .
In the next few weeks I will be putting a good portion of the other 3 boxes out in compost areas I'm starting but before next winter I will need to totally re do
all of those fresh with a small amount of seed worms to reproduce over winter.
